My first KLONKish strand of pearls

Hi raggdoll, I bought a very cheap ($3-4) plastic calipers and it was a waste of money. Then I checked many of the online reviews of calipers; the very best was about $100, but there were several almost-as-good-but-cheaper ones. I ended up getting this one for about $27 on Amazon: iGaging...

    GIA vs. EGL certification?

Thanks, Katbran, I am not insisting on ebay (no way!), nor do I have any particular yearn for natural pearls. I wanted to learn what the certifications meant and find out if folks here think they are useful or valuable to have. I am really REALLY careful about buying on ebay. I've learned...

    GIA vs. EGL certification?

I happened across a listing on ebay for a string of pears advertised as "natural saltwater pearls" (which I have learned are extremely rare). The listing had a certification from EGL that the pearls were genuine and worth $12,000...

Need a picture of an Akoya pearl with bead showing

A question for Jeremy, is this the typical nacre amount that there is on today's akoya pearls? What is the typical thickness today? Was it thicker say, 20-30 years ago? ... (Sorry this is 3questions) ... THANK YOU Linda

What I've learned about wire wrapping and jewelry making in the last couple weeks

I have had the same problem with pearls being way smaller in person than what I thought. The photos can be deceiving, even if the seller's description says "the photos have been enlarged"- my mind kinda tricks me. So I've started noting the mm measurements and drawing a rough outline of the...

    Tahitians or not tahitians ?

Oh no! Those are dyed freshwater pearls? I think I'm going to get fleeced!!!! I have been to my two local jewelry stores looking for Tahitian drop earrings. Did not find them, but they each had a necklace of Tahitian pearls. One was an ugly gray (reminded me of the color of seaweed :-) and...

    Tahitians or not tahitians ?

Hi everyone, can you please help a newbie here? In the photos I see some reflections of a bit of green (second photo) and purple (3rd photo - out of focus pearls) colors. I would have thought they were Tahitians. What did you see to lead you to the dyed freshwater conclusion? (Just trying to...

    A1 vs AAA

I just purchased a pair of Mikimoto AAA stud earrings. They are astonishing in their luster! I was looking at all the pearls at my local jeweler's and I was struck by their brilliance (granted all the other pearls were nowhere near the quality; they had some akoya strands at $495.00, and some...

    Question about black akoya pearls

Does the dying process for a black akoya pearl affect any aspect of its quality? For example, will it have less luster than a similar white akoya? Is a White akoya qualitatively better?
