Hi everybody. I bought this at a second hand shop. The guy told me it was abalone, but it looks more like a black lipped mother of pearl to me. I would love opinions on what it may be...
I am very familiar with labradorite, as it is my favorite stone. It's definitely not that. It is domed on both sides, but could be glued in the middle? If it's domed on both sides with just a bezel, maybe it's a polished piece of labradorite?
There are different species of abalone (seven just in California), some with softer colors. I have an abalone bracelet from Mexico with soft creams and browns and pinks. It definitely gives "shell". When I first picked it up I assumed it was some sort of mother of pearl, and pink is the dominant color reflected. I have never seen one with black, blue, yellow, purple before. It seems "softer" in its colors and sheen than abalone. It's really hard to get a good picture of it.
