How do I know it's not shell pearl?

amti -Thank you for the link. The close up helped with seeing the coating of the sea shell. I think Chinese ones are like a powdery coating from grind up sea shells? Is that right? I'm only basing on googling. Thx for educating me!

How do I know it's not shell pearl?

I'll try to get a better shot and post later. Can't remember how I uploaded it last time. It might be the lighting as I have weird tinted blue windows so when I look at the pics some do look bluish and some rose tinted. I would need to go outside for better lighting. I did go back to the vendor...

    Re-selling SSPs

Also I could explore restringing it into something else as handama suggested. When I looked at the video it looked like it required a lot of patience. Sorry not sure if this thread even belongs under industry news.

    Re-selling SSPs

No it wouldn't be a part time business at all. More of a hobby as I found I like to buy the pearls for family/friends who asked me to get it for them. Edit to say: I think I like the process of picking through the pearls and putting together a necklace. I guess I could start a collection and...

    Re-selling SSPs

Hi! Thanks for giving me advice. By trusted I mean the vendors are the ones at Greenhills in Manila. The 2 vendors are preferred sellers to certain client base. If they're found to be fakes there would likely be repercussions. Since it's already at retail prices and depending how hard I bargain...

    Re-selling SSPs

Would anyone know if jewelry stores (higher end family owned types) in NYC or Greenwich CT area would buy new SSP necklaces (given that they have their own buyer/supplier)? The necklaces are bought from trusted vendors with certificate of authenticity. I assume I would have to pay for a GIA...

How do I know it's not shell pearl?

I don't doubt them but I didn't have an answer for my sister as to how do I know they're not shell pearls. I did do the teeth as well as scratch test. I've bought quite a lot from the vendor and based on just buying experience of SSP from the 2 vendors and comparing them to the hundreds of other...

How do I know it's not shell pearl?

Also I have bluish tinted windows so you may see bluish due to filtered light in 2nd pic. Pic#1&3 I moved to better lighting.

How do I know it's not shell pearl?

I bought these champagne SSP 9.5mm at a trusted vendor. They were undrilled and were mostly tear dropped shaped. I had to go through for almost an hour trying to find more round ones and as blemish-free as possible. I couldn't get all with similar overtones and chose more for roundness/luster...

    Question about restringing etc

Hi. I am new to the forum. I don't really wear pearls but have been lucky enough to be in a country where SSP are available and my experience in buying is in learning from a couple trusted vendors, reading/self educating, and frequently just looking/comparing/handling the pearls. My question is...

SSP or not? What do you think?

It does look like one of your strands is SSP. The fish bites and nacre is similar to what I've seen at Greenhills for SSP. I buy at Greenhills quite often. Only with 2-3 trusted vendors. I've also brought a few to a gemologist to verify if I plan to use a new vendor. IMHO depending on the...
