    Queen Mary of Teck

Queen Mary (Queen Elizabeth's paternal grandmother) was well-known for pretty impressive jewellery on all occasions, and pearls in particular. I've just seen this photo, though, where she outdid any pearl bling I've ever seen! While amazing, that must have been seriously weighty to wear, not...

    Tahitian Pearl Ring

I've never really worn rings before (apart from on my ring finger, engagement ring etc) but I've seen some gorgeous pearl rings over the past while on this site, and I've finally taken the plunge. It's an utterly plain sterling silver band, which is what I wanted - gold doesn't really suit me...

Hair pieces you lovely lot have made - any inspiration?

I'm turning over in my mind a pearl-based hair piece - I've got a black tie bash next month, and I want to make something to wear in my hair, to distract from the fact that I'm 6 months pregnant and my posh frock doesn't fit properly (-: I've seen lots of lovely things you talented lot have...

    nylady_art - dodgy south seas / tahitians?

Browsing ebay (as you do) for pearl ****, I wondered about these, ebay item 400087201810 from seller nylady_art: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-GENUINE-TAHITIAN-SOUTH-SEA-PEARL-14K-GOLD-NECKLACE-/400087201810?pt=US_Fine_Necklaces_Pendants&hash=item5d270e3812 Quite a lot about them makes me...

Woven freshwater white and pink pearls with lapis bead

I rather like this necklace - hard to photograph, though! The freshwater pearls are absolutely tiny, each only 1-2mm long, and woven together with a lapis lazuli bead at the centre. I couldn't photograph it as an actual necklace on me, though, so did my poor best on other parts.

    Utterly lovely Victorian seed-pearl necklace

This must have been a real PITA to make, so very many tiny delicate seed pearls! I think it's absolutely gorgeous: The description says: An early Victorian seed pearl choker, 390mm overall, the circular 45mm diameter flowerhead pattern boss linked by three fine chains to leaf pattern...

Smashing pearls - in the interests of science

Following discussion on the "pinked or punked" thread, Isaac (my son) and I indulged in some destruction in the name of science. I chose the least attractive of two different types of FWP, and here are photos of before and after the smashing: 1. This is a very large baroque freshwater pearl -...

    Tahitians, freshwaters etc

I realise I've been most remiss, and am finally posting pics of my own pearls, having greatly enjoyed everyone else's photos. Firstly, my Tahitians - 17 inch necklace, and I absolutely adore them: Sorry the neck shots aren't very good, but I find it rather hard to take photos of myself!

$350- odd for 3 nasty "Tahitian" (FW) pearls on a gold plated chain, anyone?

$350- odd for 3 nasty "Tahitian" (FW) pearls on a gold plated chain, anyone? Sorry! They are Tahitian pearls. Apparently. They just look the spitting image of freshwater pearls, in pink, peach and white, all those classic Tahitian colours...

Dodgy advert? From Saks Fifth Avenue

If you know the pearl jargon, the word "Majorica"in this gives it away. But if you don't, frankly this advert is very misleading: # A modern take on classic chic in a bold strand of iridescent Tahitian pearls. 12MM Tahitian pearls # Sterling silver # Length, about 16" # Push-lock clasp # Made...

Dodgy UK ebayer selliing "tahitian" dyed freshwaters

For some strange reason, I can't send her a gentle message pointing out that her Tahitian pearls are Chinese FWP, and pretty obviously so. Perhaps some other ebay-type could oblige me? 270928594419 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270928594419 As well as the appearance, I...

Majorica pearls are fake, aren't they?

My darling Granny was certainly of that opinion, anyway. She remarked when we went on a family holiday to Majorca that they made well-known, fairly good-quality fake pearls, there. However, this seller isn't aware of that, it appears, or is trying to conceal it behind some weasel-wording...

Is "Freshadama" a general term, or specific to Pearl Paradise?

I had the vague impression that the word "Freshadama" was one coined by Pearl Paradise, and used in their marketing to describe the top few freshwater pearls. I've just come across it being used on what appears to be a completely different site. Anyone (Jeremy?) know?

    Tahitian? Or freshwater? Cairnspearls58, beware

I could be unduly cynical. But these, to me, look more like freshwater pearls than Tahitians. What do you lot reckon? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260911917342 Item number 260911917342
