    Trying to identify my pearls

You can string them with knots only at the ends-- between the final 3-4 pearls on either end, which is a Japanese technique. Then you won't be looking at any knots at all. It would make the necklace a little shorter-- about an inch.

    Trying to identify my pearls

Do you think these vintage akoyas look cheap? I strung them with 10# test Power Pro: How about these? I restrung these Freshadamas (gem grade freshwaters) with 20# test Power Pro. Certainly you can pay for someone to restring them, but it can be expensive. But perhaps not where you are...

    Trying to identify my pearls

It's really easy to restring. It's just overhand knots! No special tools needed. I favor synthetic thread. It doesn't stretch like silk and is easier to work with. Can you get Power Pro fishing line locally? It makes great knots. I've used 10# test for small pearls and 20# test for slightly...

    Trying to identify my pearls

Oh, yes, absolutely wear them! They look fine! But restring them. Trust me on this, you don't want to lose them. Give them a bath first to get the accumulated skin cells and environmental grime off. Then they will look even more lustrous. Put a little mild soap in some distilled water...

    Trying to identify my pearls

The shape of the clasp is called "melon". I have 3 of these and they are 18K. I do not expect that it was custom made, no. There are "pick-a-pearl" souvenir shops that open an oyster or mussel that you select, and you get whatever pearl was inside. Typically they then offer to set it for you...

    Trying to identify my pearls

If you think you'd like to restring and wear them, I've written a tutorial on that. It's not hard to do-- many of us restring our own pearls. https://www.pearl-guide.com/threads/stringing-tutorial-with-photos-stringing-on-serafil-beaders-secret-power-pro.6604/

Akoyas are cultured and saltwater, yes.

    Trying to identify my pearls

They are akoya pearls. I see a lot of surface imperfections but they do have nice luster, which helps obscure that. Pre-owned cultured pearls do not tend to hold their value on resale, unless they are Mikimoto brand or were owned by someone famous. If you are thinking of selling them and are...

    Yes, they are imitation pearls.

For people who purchase pearls… specifically with gold clasps

Would you wear it in front, where it would be seen? (I don't wear clasps in front.) My most comfortable strand is my GSS which has a hidden clasp.

For people who purchase pearls… specifically with gold clasps

First and foremost I need the clasp be comfortable to wear and easy to operate. If it irritates the skin my neck, or if it's such a nuisance to operate that I find myself not wearing the necklace, I restring the necklace with a better clasp. I also prefer that a clasp "go with" the overall...

Getting yellow out of pearls exposed to cigarette smoke?

I've never heard of yellowing being reversible.

Iridescence and chatoyancy in a mabe pearl

What term would you use for the flash of --well, what looks like chatoyency-- that one often sees in a mother of pearl bead? Which is what causes the blinking one sees when rolling thin-nacre beaded cultured pearls.

Is this a Natural Saltwater Pearl Necklace?

I feel it's a good thing when people come to ask about a pearl item before buying. Over the years we've helped a number of people avoid a bad purchase. Most people who ask for our opinions are polite and patient. There is a lot of rudeness on the internet but usually it doesn't erupt here.

Is this a Natural Saltwater Pearl Necklace?

These 2 pearls' blemishes look to me like those of bead nuked FWP. I don't know if one might see that on natural pearls.

Is this a Natural Saltwater Pearl Necklace?

Wow, what a ride that was! I'm sorry you didn't get it, but you did the seller a huge favor. Edited later to add: In light of what this necklace has turned out to be-- likely FWP-- it's the other would-be buyer who was done the favor!

No need to delete your post. If you do buy it, I hope it will turn out to be natural. :) I expect Dave (@Lagoon Island Pearls), who is an expert in natural pearls, will notice he's been tagged and will share his opinion.
