These are known as shell pearls. They are a type of imitation pearl. So they are fun to wear, but unfortunately not real.

I am not certain, but have been told that many special blues come from Tsushima. That's probably where they came from. There were from the brother of the gentleman you met in Kobe who had all the special tiny akoya strands.

Unfortunately these are not South Sea or Tahitian. They are dyed, Chinese freshwater pearls. I am 100% sure.

From your story, I wish I could say they were real, but it does appear to be a strand of faux pearls. The surface does appears to be manufactured. It's beautiful though, and graduated nicely. I would recommend wearing it proudly :)

Yes, beaded Chinese freshwater. They are real pearls, but the quality it too low for use in jewelry. Unfortunately they have almost no value.
