I am not certain, but have been told that many special blues come from Tsushima. That's probably where they came from. There were from the brother of the gentleman you met in Kobe who had all the special tiny akoya strands.

From your story, I wish I could say they were real, but it does appear to be a strand of faux pearls. The surface does appears to be manufactured. It's beautiful though, and graduated nicely. I would recommend wearing it proudly :)
This is a worthless piece of shell, not a pearl.
You might sell it to someone looking for a doorstop or a bookend. Maybe someone would give you $1-$2 for it.
