What should I do with these old Biwa pearls?

They look like second harvest freshwater pearls from China. So what are second harvest pearls? After a mussel's tissue-grafted pearls are harvested, the mussel can be placed back in the water to make more pearls in the pearl sac that is already there. Pearls that come out in the second harvest...

I want these to be saltwater...but???

I think everything added together points to their being FWP. Sometimes it is very obvious what pearls are, even just from one photo. Other times, it is less obvious, and it helps me make a better educated guess if a poster provides all the information they have on the pearls, including things...

I want these to be saltwater...but???

Dyed FWP, is what I think. The appearance of the pits, the poor stringing job, the way the clasp is attached without gimp, and the overall quality of the surface. Also Tahitian pearls in strands are not usually all the same size; usually there is a bit of graduation. What does the seller say...

I want these to be saltwater...but???

These days I need to be able to zoom in closer to see details. (My right eye has a cataract that is ready for surgery, but I am waiting until spring to do it.) But I, too, am leaning toward their being Tahitians.

Message me the link to the actual auction, if you'd like me to look at the seller's other photos. Maybe I'll get a better idea that way.

Easy, nice clasps. One touch, magnetic, etc. Show me

I wonder if a large carabiner locking clasp would work for her? These are beautiful, though pricey: https://marlaaaron.com/collections/locks Or the more common interlocking oval clasps, sometimes called "orbit clasps". See Bella Findings and elsewhere. These can be found in gold, silver and...

Are these pearls or shells? I know it was bought in Hawaii. Also do you know the makers mark and do I need to have them insured? Do they hold any valu

No need to insure! They are "rice krispie" pearls, freshwater pearls cultured in Cristaria plicata, the cockscomb mussel, in China. I do not recognize the "L" mark but it is 14k gold.

Is this finally what I think it is? 🧐🫣

Post better photos when you get it. Could be Tahitian but could be FWP.

Please tell me these are Akoya 🫣

Yup, lots of fake graduated strands out there! But that's logical, right? Back when most pearl strands were graduated, of course the fakes would be, too, the better to imitate.

Bean-type clasps are easy to use. I strung one of my husband's Tahitians with one of those. They are one-touch.

    Can I see your pendant?

Also-- you could get a AAA instead of Hanadama. Hanadama pearls are AAAs that have been certified by the Pearls Science Lab (or the GIA) to meet certain minimum standards, but a carefully chosen AAA would also be great, and then you could get the larger pearl. Also-- I don't think single pearls...

You may consider getting on email lists for announcement of sales. Discounts of 15-20% off are not unusual, especially with holidays approaching. Then you could get a larger pearl for less.

    Can I see your pendant?

For a pendant? Sacrifice size, no question. Pearls are all about luster and as this will be a stand-alone pearl, you will want it to look fabulous. BTW many have noted that high luster makes a pearl look larger, and I agree. Especially a white pearl.
