    My pearls

If she’s like her mother, she’ll have any number of creative ways to play with this! in fact, I’d be prepared to mail her the rest of the pearls with a “Pattye” kit. Or Wendy kit. Or Bernadette kit, or Cees. Our crowd gets around!

    My pearls

I think The Spanish girl had a maid, and a longer necklace because the portrait shows shadows of dark glowing beads winding up her braid. Or a shorter necklace, with extenders and ribbons, but I don’t think so. It’s not totally comfortable, but the braid supports a lot of the weight. Ta-da...

    My pearls

Ok! I sort of approximated the Spanish girl, but by myself, so it’s only an approximation. 1) French braid to base of skull, rubber band, pony tail left. 2) 18” Tahitian, ball clasp 3) clasp necklace around neck 4) knot long narrow scarf over the clasp 5) haul the necklace and scarf above the...
  7. I’ll try again. I have some 2008 metallics/exotics, bought second-hand a decade-plus later. The necklace is very short but I’m lucky to have some strands of small pearls from Pattye with a generous sprinkling of metallics. Now I’ll try to post a before-disassembling photo, because the pearls...

Thanks for the update and laugh, Charlotta! I know, no matter how I consider it, powdered wig or powdered hair, how was the necklace balanced or attached so it didn’t pull at her scalp, or choke her?

    My pearls

I’ve been thinking more about the young woman in the portrait, and your daughter. Probably you all realized this already, but I thought the subject had wound leaves through her powdered hair (or wig), and I was thinking “Gross, the leaf fluids will get all over the pearls, and the leaves...

    My pearls

Thank you, SydK. I don’t feel so clever, so thank you! The portrait subject has such a demure but flirtatious expression it spurred a whole bunch of memories. I’ve been a voracious escapist reader since I first learned how, and Jane Eyre, and The Little Women were my Mother’s childhood books...

    My pearls

I’m speculating that the high choker is suspended (by braids, braided ribbon, and other decorative elements) from perhaps a wig, or an elaborate hair arrangement including little poufs or ‘mice’. I think anyone who could afford pearls like that would also have a maid to dress her hair or wigs...
