collection of Upper Mississippi River basin natural pearls.

Hopefully linking here the article The American Pearl Rush It's Wisconsin Beginnings by George Johnson. Enjoy. Great pearl photos. Our forum member, pearl-man, Norm Lange, has an extensive collection of Mississippi River pearls; he and George became friends, shared research and photos for this...

Why does my pearl have a spot of white in it?

I'm guessing this strand is alternating natural color and dyed freshwater pearls. Is there any difference in the level of the white area, or a noticable edge where the colors transition? Have you looked at the area through a loupe? For some reason this area didn't take the dye. It probably...

    Graduated Orchestra

Hi audiB, do you mean an opera length necklace? If not this, can you show us a photo of the orchestra necklace? Pearl Dreams has provided an excellent detailed stringing tutorial here It will be easiest to string if the holes are very close to the same size. If the holes in the larger pearls...

    Pearls at the Met Gala

Freshpeachez, Yes, I love the pinstripes, too; a much more wearable jacket! Pharrell has done some cultured pearl jewelry designs, so it seems if they were using "real pearls" they would mention it and a high $$$$$ value, not just the number of pearls on the jacket. Though Swarovski pearls...

    Pearls at the Met Gala

QuestLove's jacket has freshwater pearls; but it looks to me like Pharrell's was imitation. So which jacket do we prefer?

Need help identifying these two pearl necklaces.

Agree with A Breaker, lovely Akoyas! Well done, Brenda! Given the age of the pearls and their roundness, they would have the mother of pearl bead nucleus. I would just add, these appear to be more "natural white" rather than "pinked". Most of the Akoyas are now treated to have a slight pink...

    Freshwater or saltwater pearl?

Yes, a possibility it could be natural. Are you planning to reattach it to the brooch? Would it be possible to show us a photo of the brooch? We love these kind of mysteries.

    Freshwater or saltwater pearl?

If a true antique, or close to that age, my guess would be South Sea, so saltwater. Based on shape and luster. Has adhesive discolored the area around the drill hole, or is it another material (glue)?

    Decisions Decisions

Mango S, I feel you will love having a rope necklace, and the 52" size will be a fun and versatile length! The 7.5-8mm is a good size, with some weight, but not too heavy. (I have a similar pearl size, 75". If you can wear a 17.5" necklace, you will be able to triple for a chic choker look...

Antique double strand PEARL TYPE ID PLEASE

To me, these definitely look like imitation pearls, because of all the places that are peeling and the transparent parts one can see when the photos are enlarged. Nacre on cultured and natural pearls doesn't crack that way. High end imitation pearls can have many layers of fish scale coating...
