    Pair of 28mm coin pearls

Are these already drilled for earrings? Being flatter, they would weigh less than rounds. For me, post should be set closer to the top for the earring to sit correctly.

    Pearl life

If this offer doesn't suit you, perhaps consider buying a single 10mm pearl of your choice and have an independent jeweler mount it on the pendant after removing the damaged pearl.

Maker's mark. Vintage Akoya Japanese, but I don't know who

Thanks, I thought that also, but wasn't sure I read it correctly. From online search "An 850 mark could also indicate 85% pure silver, as in the case of 850 silver, a less pure alloy than sterling silver. So likely it is incorrectly marked as Sterling. Interesting.

    Pearl Strands-identify?

Welcome to Pearl-Guide, teachinb! These appear to be cultured pearls from China, with a bead nucleus. I'm unable to tell from the photo if the pearls are dyed or natural color. Hard to say where she might have purchased them; as a jeweler she would have many sources for pearl purchases. I don't...

    Fuzzy knots

Good question, Beck. Welcome back. Yes, bigger knots could likely show more wear. Using heavier thread and 2 strands instead of 4 thinner strands would be an interesting experiment. Agree with you that necklaces wear more slowly for the reason you've suggested. Recently I've noticed wear...

    Stringing large pearls with wire?

Excellent discussion! It really is a personal choice. Although I haven't tried bumpers, they do come in black, white, gold, silver and clear, offering color options and flexibility just as knotting does. Imo, flexibility is the most important reason for knotting between each pearl.

clever idea for poorly shaped pearls

The listing says golden SS, gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima shell. One has to scroll way, way down to find additional info on the Agustus listings. Historically we've seen unusual, possibly flawed pearls combined with metal or gem to create "creatures" amd make the best of unusual pearls. It...

    Identity Please

Lovely pearls, r.davidson. I'm with Pearl Dreams on this set being SSP, given the known place and date of purchase, plus my feeling that fwp in this size and luster were probably not being produced yet. In the mid 90's I was with Nordstrom Fine Jewelry and saw my first strand of small white...

    Mikimoto Case & Necklace

Wouldn't it be helpful if Mikimoto was more forthcoming with "free" information, or if there was a comprehensive book one could reference.

    Are these Tahitian pearls?

Looks like the natural greenish tone of Tahitians to me. What size are they? Dyed freshwater pearls usually have more of the bluish purple shade.

    Mystery Vintage Freshwater Pearls

Helen, thanks very much for the update! Hmm, still the mystery lingers ~ fascinating! Have you tested these with a UV black light? They look to me closest in color to Cortez Pearls. Wondering if tissue nucleation was happening in La Paz in the early 1900's.
