    Help needed!

I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. To me they all look like imitation pearls except for photo #3. The pearls in photo #3 are off round; some have the eggy / potato shape typical to freshwaters. Please check the clasp with a good magnifier or a jeweler's loupe for marks indicating what...

Guy finds south sea pearl necklace at thrift store!!!

These appear to be shell beads with an imitation pearl coating. See the striations in the bead? -- that is characteristic of shell. Just because the bead is shell does not mean the coating must be real nacre. These kinds of "shell [imitation] pearls" have been around for a while. Mark Brown was...

Are these South Sea Pearls? 🧐

Those are all in the natural color range for FWP.

Are these South Sea Pearls? 🧐

I never would have guessed there were so many naturally colored FWP of that color. As long as you didn't overpay for FWP, wear and enjoy them!

Live Discussion: The New Bead-Nucleated Freshwater Pearls from China

I'm on page 436 of Pearls by Strack, in the section called "Growth Rate and Growth Time." This is for the sankaku mussel a.k.a. Hyriopsis cumingii. It says the growth rate ranges from 1mm-5mm per year, depending on water temperatures and the season, with other factors listed as also influencing...

Live Discussion: The New Bead-Nucleated Freshwater Pearls from China

I don't think it was stated in the video. I seem to recall reading that a tissue-only pearl can take 5-6 years to grow to a good size (say, 9-10mm). I'll check Strack and other books and see what they say about that. But however long it is, it is bound to be considerably longer than starting...

Live Discussion: The New Bead-Nucleated Freshwater Pearls from China

I thought it was fascinating that they have created a hybrid mussel whose nacre is so white that its mantle is used as donor tissue to produce pearls that do not need to be bleached. For me one of the big problems with FWP is that even bleached, they are for the most part just a bit too warm a...

    My Eclipse pearls faded.

It's good you were made whole and clearly have done very nicely with the pearl points! I bought my daughter some lavender/purple Edison studs from a trusted seller on Etsy to go with a pendant I had also given her. Both faded, but to the same extent (so they still match) and she still likes...

Can anyone vouch for this website?

Zero reviews and never heard of them...I'd stick with a company with a history of being trustworthy, personally.

Lurker, got a huge tease and a disappointment 🙁

As to removing the charm, that should also be easy, but you would need 2 fine-nose/ jewelry pliers. From your photo it seems the charm's jump ring is an open (unsoldered) ring. Open it as this short video demonstrates (except I don't think it matters if you deform the ring if you don't want the...

Lurker, got a huge tease and a disappointment 🙁

So they are Majorica. Mystery solved. Wear them! Majorica imitations are the best fakes out there-- they have 30-40 layers of coating and are very, very durable! More durable than real pearls. As to the charm-- you can remove it if you like. Hey, gold is selling at a high price and that is 14K.

Actually I believe the bracelet is Majorica. Not only because of the pseudo-orient (red and green overtones) caused by the final layer of coating but also the clasp style and the little corrugated conical end beads are Majorica style. (I own many Majorica pieces.) I've never seen the letter...

Are these South Sea Pearls? 🧐

Just repeating what I wrote on the other thread, I've never seen GSS pearls that look like that, so I think they are dyed FWP.

    Are these south sea pearls?

Hi Izzie, Generally it's a better idea to start your own new thread as it is likely to get more views that way. But since we are here, I can only say that personally I've never seen a golden SSP strand that looked like that. My vote is that they are dyed FWP.
