    Nautilus pearl

I am confused . On page 34 of the 5th and latest edition of Renee Newman's "Pearl Buying Guide", Fig.3.47 is a picture of a: "Nautilus pompilius blister pearl. Photo and pearl from Stephen Metzler." On the next page 35 is a write up by Blaire (GemGeek) which describes Nautilus pearls...

    New Freshwaters

If you are referring to the "very putrid liquid", it's not weird at all. Those of us who drill pearls know that it is quite common, be they South Sea keshi and baroque or freshwater fireballs, etc. A few years ago, I read an article by a well known pearl dealer, he said that when he drilled his...

    Tom Stern's natural pearls

I have a question. Using the above example of the 20mm pearl that is 99% nacre; if the pearl is accidently dropped, can the "shock" (for lack of a better word) of hitting a hard floor, cause a line in the inner nacre, assuming there was no line prior to dropping the pearl? Gail

    New Freshwaters

I received this email today from Jack Lynch regarding this type of freshwater pearl cultivation. "These are a new type of Chinese freshwater pearl on the market and I thought it might be of interest to you. The method of cultivation is a new step in the coin pearl/ spherical bead nucleation...

    New Freshwaters

Why? There is no bead in them and they certainly are not rotting...... and as for that brown liquid we joke about, it is frequently in the most expensive South Sea baroques, too. Gail

    New Freshwaters

I just spoke to Jack. Unfortunately, he's not able to write up anything now because he's so busy getting ready for the Tucson show but he did fill me in via the phone. He said,"The mollusks are nucleated with muck". That's right....... "muck" as in dirt..... I kid you not! By the time the pearl...

    Natural pearl french website

Although the jewelry under the "Collections" catagory is nice, many of the pearls do not appear to me to be natural. To me, they look to be cultured freshwater pearls. Gail

Dogeared Jewelry - perpetrating the myth

I do not have an answer to your question. I can only tell you that I have studied with master goldsmiths of classical/ancient jewelry and the formula that I printed above was the one they shared with me. Gail

Tears of Mermaids: The Secret Story of Pearls

Somewhere in the anals of TPP, a poster wonders too, if someone is posting as ZE, but Jeremy specifically puts any notion of a ZE impersonator to rest. I can't find his post but he is quite clear that it is really ZE posting under her own name. Gail

Dogeared Jewelry - perpetrating the myth

! No.... don't alloy with sterling. I had feeling you might think of sterling so I capitalized "FINE" in my prior post. If you want electrum, use only fine silver to alloy with the gold. Gail

Dogeared Jewelry - perpetrating the myth

The few times I've worked with electrum, I've alloyed it myself. Start with a piece of 24k gold and weigh it. Then add 40% of FINE silver to whatever the 24k gold weight is. ex: Melt (10 dwts of 24k gold plus 4 dwts of fine silver) = electrum. For a little stronger metal, you can use 22k...
