Rainbow bands on white South Sea pearl. Why?

I don't see a flat side either. Seems like iridescence.

    What happened to my pearl

Re: dust, I was not referring to dust floating in the air, but of dust that settles on surfaces, which any person who cleans and dusts their home will contact with their hands, dustrags etc. This will affect rings over time, not necklaces-- and a ring worn all the time for decades will be...

    Need help to identify please

These are cultured freshwater pearls from China. They are solid nacre, having no bead inside, and very durable.

    What happened to my pearl

Amethyst is quartz. Quartz is very, very common in the environment, and dust often includes quartz particles. So any ring with a quartz stone that is worn most of the time is bound to come in contact with lots of dust. Over time the stone is more likely to show wear. Maybe for an anniversary...

    What happened to my pearl

Other stones would be better able to withstand daily wear, yes. And yes, chemicals can be very hard on gold. I once worked at a therapeutic pool and didn't realize the chlorine would eat away at the gold. I had to have repairs done on the prongs of my engagement ring. I could have lost the diamond.

    What happened to my pearl

It looks like the nacre was thin on the akoya pearl, and peeled off. What you see is the shell bead nucleus underneath. If you care enough about the ring to pay for repairs, you could have the pearl replaced with a small freshwater pearl instead, which has no bead inside. If you do that, I'd...

    Decisions Decisions

Afterthought: If you can't find a 52" necklace to try on for weight, connect three 18" necklaces end to end (= 54" but close enough). Even glass imitation pearls would give you a pretty good idea of the weight. Many department stores have imitation pearls you could try this with.

    Decisions Decisions

How do you feel about heavy necklaces? Because pearls are heavy, and 52 inches in the size you are considering will definitely be heavy! If you can try on a 52 inch rope anywhere, I urge you to do so before buying. See if you are comfortable with that weight. One thing about long ropes is that...

    Genuine Mikimoto?

Knots are about 0.3mm (each) if the thread is fine, x 92 additional knots if you knot between each pearl = necklace would be about 2 cm longer (about 8/10 of an inch longer) than it is now. If the knots are a little larger it could be an inch longer.

Pearl Bracelet. What is this supposed to show?

Looks like akoyas (looking at overtones).

Please help me date my grandmothers pearls

Must be 2nd World War-- not first. Cultured akoya pearls were not being sold during the 1st World War.

    Genuine Mikimoto?

That is a lovely necklace you've inherited! The clasp appears to be Mikimoto and they are akoyas. Their size range (3mm-7mm) is typical of graduated necklaces sold in wartime Japan (WWII / Korean War era). Many servicemen bought these necklaces for their sweethearts; the necklaces' being...

Please help me date my grandmothers pearls

It's a nice graduated strand of akoya pearls, but without a Mikimoto clasp or documentation, you can't be sure of the brand, since any necklace can be put in any box-- even by sellers. But no matter, they are beautiful and lustrous, and most importantly, a very sentimental piece. These...

Grandma's Pearls - are they real?

Here is the tutorial: https://www.pearl-guide.com/threads/stringing-tutorial-with-photos-stringing-on-serafil-beaders-secret-power-pro.6604/ As far as caring for them: Store them apart from jewelry that can scratch them. Pearls should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take...
