The photo of Cairncross Jeweler's exterior is so inviting! I love the old, high-end UK stores with their wood paneling, welcoming you in from the chill. CarolK

    Scottish Pearls

Deborah, Oh! What a treat! Thank you for following up on the tantalizing mention of "freshness" in the Scottish river pearl. The luster in those pearls is clearly visible even in the photos. The Australian South Sea Pearl industry is quite lucky that Scottish pearls are so imperiled. The...

    The pearl stilletto

My thoughts exactly! And, while you're at it, why not sew a pearl spaghetti-strap, or laced-back dress? Seriously! Life is too short not to dress with flair!!! CarolK (she said, while wearing a big T-shirt and sweatpants)

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Valeria101, Hi! I *did* consider the necklace here: http://www.rubylane.com/shops/amuletbox/iteml/gtp236#pic1, and now you've reminded me of it! I'm going to sleep on the decision (hey, liquid cash is liquid cash). If I end up buying the bracelet, I will certainly post photos!!! Thanks so...

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Pearl_dreams, Were the pearls over 3mm, I would be much more doubtful. About numbers--again, you are correct. In researching this purchase, I found out that seed pearls were hugely popular during the Victorian Era. They mostly came from India and China, and were string on horsehair into...

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Thanks, Barbie! The seller described the opal to me as "white opal". The opal/snake combination lends support to this piece as being Victorian. Queen Vic. supposedly loved snake jewelry and opals. She popularized opal jewelry despite the Sir Walter Scott-inspired superstitions against it. CarolK

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Wow!!! Thanks, Pearl_dreams! These may very well be Japanese keshi, and I'll bet you are correct about the etymology of "seed pearls". The seller responded to me that she has had the bracelet for a long time, with no information about the provenance. She thinks she bought it from another...

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Hi, Pearl_dreams, The seller describes the pearls as measuring "approximately 1.34 mm in diameter". Is that too small for cultured? May I assume them to be natural at that size? Thanks, CarolK

    Antique 10-strand seed pearl bracelet

Oo. Errr. I didn't know that there was a difference between natural pearls and early freshwaters. Thanks for the suggestion. I will ask the seller about the provenance. CarolK

    Kojima pearls

Wow!!! She's buff!!! For side money, Josh could turn his pearl farm into a Fat Camp. He could *charge* personal trainer rates for fat desk-job geeks (like me) to come and do actual work, with Sarah as the Ahe Fat Camp/Pearl Farm Poster Child. "Here's how you'll look after having scrubbed 10...

Dang!!! That is a ***BEAUT***!!! (Homer Simpson donut sound) Re: The necklace at the beginning of this thread: Okay, how about replacing the regular "mesh", above, with a loose, irregular arrangement of gold wires, on which you peg-mount the pearls? This would preserve the current...

    stinky pearl dilemma!

Sleight, Thanks for the update! Your standards sure are high. That seems to me like a lovely pearl. Just warn your 6 year-old about wearing the pearl while swimming with her friends. If it starts to stink up, she might have to wait 20 years before living that down!!! CarolK

I think I read somewhere that people are attempting ***salt***water pearl cultivation in Hawaii, but not fresh. CarolK
