We had a great first day! Customers have gone with size and fancy colours. Our 20.7mm South Sea piece was first to go. We also sold many large Tahiti loose pearls 16, 17 and 18mm. Peacock and bright green Tahiti’s have also gone well. I am loving the buzz of the show this year!

Most of the treated gold pearls are produced in Japan. They generally buy cheap light cream / yellow pearls which are hard to sell and make them gold. I know of two companies in Kobe that offer such treatments. Sadly a good percentage of this “gold” is sold on as “natural” colour. I frequently...

I have a distinct feeling I was offered these as loose recently .... if it was these.... the material is fantastic. I only passed because i find baroques slower than a few years ago. I wonder if other vendors have had the same reaction to baroques?

You would need to send the necklace to someone who has a stock of old Akoya so that they can find a match. Which country are you in?

Most of the colour treatment to this type of pearl takes place in Japan. Much of the "gold" South Sea that leaves Japan was not that colour when it arrived.....

The 3rd Photo - with the "loose" pair being held looks suspiciously orange.... at least on my screen ....though I don't think its possible to tell from a photograph whether the pears are natural colour or not. The over 'orange' pearls are often South Sea that have been colour enhanced.

Pearlescence .... Name and shame!! I regularly exhibit in Hong Kong and I long for a level playing field......

My real bug bear remains "Chinese size" 9-10mm which is, at best 8.5-9.5mm. Many companies will then sell this item as a 9-10mm strand or even as a 10mm strand. It simply is not. This is not a measurement rounding issue. It is deception pure and simple.

I think a 3.8mm pearl should be described as a 3.8mm pearl. It's not rocket science. I find it sad that some people seem to need to play with the facts to do business. Business is based on trust.

The "Chinese size" issue is a major problem in our industry. It is one of the elephants in the room that no one likes to discuss.... but here goes... It's not a dumb question! If only the Chinese played by the rules.... They seem to think that "Chinese size" is acceptable. They always round up by a mm or more. Caveat emptor!

I have never purchased this colour! They were a deeper pink / purple shade.

Pearlesence - We have hundreds of necklaces as well as Kilos of loose pearls. My opinion is that the colour has changed ....

Oh dear Pearlescence. It is not "one pearl" - it is a vast quantity. You can choose to believe whatever you like - it makes no odds to me whatever.

The owner of Grace pearl told me he chose the name - he said that the pearls were a great invention.... it is a lame name though .....

If you are purchasing your pearls from dealers in Hong Kong then it might be wise to follow the advice from Pearlescence. I find however that you get the best items and prices by purchasing from producers directly. It does mean you need to travel a lot but the result is you get the best pearls...
