    My new best friends…..

I bought a vintage pair of earrings for the price of the silver screw back fittings.they had at sometime been glued in place with dark brown glue, the residue came off with hot water. They are obviously not matched pearls as my head separates my ears ,no one’s going to notice….

    What’s happening here?

It seems only pearls have this ability ,maybe because they are a product of something living, and maybe that’s why older pearls hold such a fascination…..

    What’s happening here?

Oops.my apologies to Douglas, the comment I made reads very abruptly, and he hadn’t made any negative comments about the pearls at all.Thank you Jeremy for your comments, Old pearls have a fascination because they carry a secret history( and possibly detritus of the previous owner if you don’t...

    What’s happening here?

There’s such a thing as sentimental value,I mentioned earlier that I thought maybe there were 2 different strands made into one necklace, maybe, although poor quality in your eyes, they weren’t to a past owner.

In search of info on pearl necklace plz

Numpty comment here, needing to be clarified.I assume the “ winking test “ only works on spherical pearls,as baroque’s by their nature will have a varying amount of nacre covering the nucleus. Is that right?
  6. I wasted a happy hour looking at each Pearl in this necklace, and I’m wondering if in times past someone had used two necklaces to make this little show off. There are about 20 pearls that show some kind of onion effect( I love that description!) and the rest have obvious beads in them, with a...

    Another little mystery…

Goodness,I just miss a day,and suddenly lots more comments! Thankyou for your input.I think they must be akoyas,Iv never seen old fresh waters that had this shape or lustre, and it seems the only reason the previous seller thought they were “ river pearls” was because of the marcasite...

    Another little mystery…

Thanks Jeremy for your comments.I know that a small bead is used to start the culturing process, but what would have been used in the really tiny pearls? By the way I don’t think these pearls ever got as far as America, they have lived their life in a small town in the north of Scotland!

    Gulf pearls?

Thank you El Cortez for your prompt answer, and I will certainly look at the threads you suggest. The whole idea of a sustainable natural Pearl project is intriguing, and I think there are a lot of us that will be interested on how it works out. However beautiful a cultured Pearl is,the romance...
