Hello everyone. I am brand new to this forum and a complete novice when it comes to pearls, or any jewelry for that matter. I am here because my daughter is getting married. She had promised me she would never grow up, but reneged on that promise. Incidentally, she will graduate from Medical School one week before her wedding. I would like to present her with a strand of pearls (necklace) on her wedding day. I have read as much on this form as I could and believe I want either a 16" or 18" strand of Akoya pearls. I am going for a very classy, classic look.

From what I read, Pearl Paradise is a great site from which to make the purchase and I do plan to reach out to them. Should I consider other sellers?

My questions for the group are:

What length would you recommend? She is about 5'4" tall. In case she wants to wear it for the wedding, she has chosen a strapless, sleeveless, off the shoulder dress.

What sized pearls would you recommend? I have read that 7.5 X 7.0 is the most common size, but can begin to feel a little small over time.

Any advice for a lost Dad would be appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on your budget, but of you can swing it, I'd get Hanadama pearls.

"Pearl Shrinkage Syndrome" is real; we tend to want larger pearls as we get older. While 7.0-7.5m is a classic look, if you can go larger, do.

Prices jump significantly at 8+mm (because the akoya oyster is a small oyster, so there are not as many high end pearls that a are 8mm and larger.) That is an argument for not exceeding 7.5-8.0mm.

That being said, one of my favorite strands is a 9.5-10.0mm baroque akoya strand and it doesn't feel a bit too large. :)

Thank you so much for the response. I think I will look at 7.5-8.0 mm. Do you know whether young ladies (she is 27) wear the 16" necklaces or would they prefer 18"? She is not exactly petite, but still pretty small. I was hoping to stay under $2,000 and $1,500 would be ideal. But I don't even know if that is realistic and would adjust as necessary to get her a nice quality item.

First, congratulations!!! Your daughter is very lucky. And yes, the 7mm are a common size and very classic. Pearl paradise is very helpful and will do one on one zooms to show you the pearls .

The best length for the pearls when worn with the wedding dress will depend on the neckline of the dress. If it's not to be a surprise, I'd consult with her before deciding on the length to have it strung.

Even if you/she decide to have it strung to 16" or 17", I'd buy the full 18". This is because the Pearl Science Lab in Japan, which issues the Hanadama certificate, certifies strands that are 18" when knotted. The pearls in that strand all match. Even if she prefers a shorter necklace now, she may want the extra pearls later-- whether to lengthen it or to make matching dangle earrings. Getting extra pearls that match in color, luster, tone etc. later would be hard-- and they would not be Hanadama grade.

If there are budgetary constraints, I'd get the best luster you can for your budget.
AAA akoyas would also be lovely!

Thank you. The wedding dress she has chosen is a strapless, sleeveless, off the shoulder dress with kind of a scoop neckline (I am sure there is a name for it, but Dad doesn't know wedding dresses). That is why I thought pearls might look nice with it. It is a surprise, so I wouldn't want to ask her. Also, she has never had or worn pearls, so I am not sure she would know how to respond.

Do you have a picture of the dress from an online source?

IMO, smaller pearls look better as a shorter necklace, and larger pearls look better as a longer necklace. Maybe decide the size you want to buy and then choose the length accordingly.

I am not a fashion expert by any means so hopefully others will reply!

I know it’s a gift, and gifts are usually a surprise, but have you considered asking her? You don’t even need to show her, just ask her what length she wants and if she wants smaller or larger pearls.
Some people like me are weird, I don’t like pearls over 5mm, which is annoying because I’ve had many people assume bigger is better and now I have a small hoard of pearls I never wear.

I have a picture of my daughter in the dress that her mom sent from the dress shopping excursion, but I think I would be in trouble if I posted a picture of my daughter on this forum. The dress in the picture is one I found on-line that has a very similar neck line, though the rest of the dress is different enough I don't think I will get in trouble. My daughter's hair is a little shorter than the model's, but I think she plans to wear it up anyway. Does this help?

I recommend 18". I think that's a good length for a lifetime piece. Also, I think the classic 7 - 7.5 mm is best, considering her profession. When she decides to go into politics, she'll need the big and bold. ;)
I suggest buying matching studs at the same time, to be gifted for a different occasion (birthday or whatever).

I also suggest casually asking her if she's chosen wedding jewelry, just so you are prepared.

I agree. Surprises are overrated. Better to be able to get what the recipient actually prefers.
A friend and I were discussing surprise parties at one time, and my friend commented "call it what it is -- an ambush."

I hear what you are saying and have thought a lot about that. But I have this vision in my head of giving them to her the morning of the wedding... And I think the moment looses a lot of the power if she knows what I am about to give her. Since I am paying for most of the wedding, I doubt she is expecting a present at all, and that is part of it.

Thanks. That is great advice. Her mom is very, very close to her and I think as the day gets closer they will discuss her jewelry for the day. Her mom will know about this and can steer her away from buying anything herself... I also am not married to the idea (get the pun) that she will necessarily wear these at the wedding. She has a vision of the look she is going for and these may not work with that. All of which will be fine with me and we have the kind of relationship where she will have no trouble telling me that. I just would like her to have them and, if she does want to wear them, I want them to work well with the dress. Perhaps it is her something "new" for the wedding.

OOOO, NOOOOO. She will have already picked out her bridal jewelry way before her wedding day. Do not surprise her with something she may not even want. Her wedding is not about you. Tell her what you would like to get her and let her pick out what she likes. This way it's a bonding event with the two of you, and she'll treasure that. If you ambush her with a necklace that isn't her vibe, she may feel really pressured. Or you may be really disappointed with her response. (This comment is from someone who hates surprises. Your mileage may vary.)

Have you considered the idea that her fiancé may have bought her jewelry to wear? A friend of mine received a spectacular akoya necklace from her fiancé for their wedding.

The dress is lovely! I don't know what length I'd go with. A choker could look stunning.
But what if she wants sparkly bling instead (real or imitation)?

Perfect! I think you have the right attitude, and a gift it is!
Just a thought, maybe give them at the rehearsal dinner -- the wedding day will be a blur of activity.

THIS! Most brides don't remember most of what happens on their wedding day. It's all a blur. Give them to her when she's not so overwhelmed with everything else that's happening.

I have also thought about giving them to her at her graduation a week prior to the wedding. Then she would not feel any pressure to wear them at the wedding. Lots to think about. I have 6 or 7 months to think about it. Thanks for all the great advice.
