Gold Pearls - Natural or Not

Hi all,

I didn't know that pearls came in this Golden colour unless they were South Sea pearls. Am I right or is it possible to get Akoya in this SS type golden colour. Surely they would be rare if natural. 8 mm in size so a nice size for Akoya but are they dyed or treated in some way.

Would love some opinions. Jeremy's Exotics got me thinking that almost any colour is naturally possible, if few and far between so I am curious what the consensus is. The enhancer pearl is SS.

Thanks, Bodecia

This necklace reminds me of an Akoya pearl necklace from one of our forum members' favorite topics of disscussion, pearllunar.

The seller claims that the color is natural and untreated. I know that the natural colors of Akoya can tend toward yellowish ivory, and that they are routinely bleached to white, but these pearls are really yellow. What's the verdict?

Hi everyone!

If these are Akoyas, they probably are colour treated, a strand of this deep natural colour would cost a fortune.:p
The natural = untreated golden ones I have seen are more yellowish than golden and for that matter they have a much more "bleached" look.

Hello Nicole & Jerin,

I do realise that most akoya with golden or yellow colours are bleached but in the photo I attached the pearls are very different from the ones that Nicole attached. They do look "exotic" and I am wondering whether or not it is possible that some akoya's have that exotic look naturally. They certainly have plenty of lustre unlike the second photo which does show the golden colour but also looks dare I say, cheap or dyed.

Wonder if one of our experts could jump in here. It was Jeremy's exotics that made me think the pearls in first look a little similiar.
