    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Folks... thanks so much. I'm tearing up at my computer, here, seeing all your kind messages. We were lucky in that he was able to be at home, surrounded by his family. All 4 of us kids were there, and my stepmother, whom he adored. Fighting a bug of some kind (no surprise) and will probably...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Thank you, newberry. My dad passed away last night. Thank you all for your kindness--this wasn't quite how I intended to become part of the forum. But I really appreciate the welcome. I will update you folks about my pearls when I have a little more mental room for things like that. Meanwhile...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

KaySD, Katbran, thank you. I'm here with my siblings and stepmom, we've been... in a vigil, I guess. Not sure how much longer--tomorrow? Wed? We're doing our best to breathe and take care of one another. KaySD, I'm really sorry for your loss, and having your parents pass so close...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Thank you BWeaves, that is an interesting idea. I wonder if people think it would be worth the $250 to ask GIA to examine them. Perhaps PP would be a better bet, first. I'm in the painful "limbo" part of the process with my dad right now, and my concentration is not all that good. When things...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

CathyKeshi, Pearl Dreams, thank you so much for your words. It's a difficult time. It sounds as if Pearl Paradise is worth contacting. The pearl world is honestly confusing to a newbie like myself, and recommendations like yours are truly helpful. Thanks again for your thoughts and advice.

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Thank you, KaySD, I really appreciate your kindness. It's a strange and sad moment for me right now. I just learned today that my very ill father probably only has a few days left, and I left work to travel down and see him. I'm typing this in his living room right now. On the topic of pearls...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Thank you, Pearl Dreams - wonderful detailed info. I'm so glad I asked the people of Pearl Guide for your thoughts on these pearls...! If I decide to get them assessed by GIA I will update this thread with what I learn.

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

BWeaves, thank you for your comment. I will mull that over. I admit it's kind of an exciting prospect, but I'm thinking the main difference it would make to me is whether I need to insure them, I guess...? I'm interested to know - are the surface characteristics of natural akoyas and cultured...

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Pearl Dreams, thanks so much for the link! I'll give it a look tomorrow. I want to wear these pearls a lot, so I think a simple clasp might be what I need, but maybe in gold. Something to consider. Thanks again.

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

That is highly cool to know, Pearl Dreams. :-) I would love to learn more about the early history of akoya culturing. I'd also be curious to know what people thought would be an appropriate clasp for this particular strand, if I felt like upgrading...?

Marianne, thanks so much for your kind words. I miss her a lot. Pareltje, I really appreciate your assessment. I actually love baroque Akoyas, and wouldn't be disappointed if that's what they turn out to be.

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

For what it's worth, my mother told me (when I was a kid) that these are "real" - i.e., not cultured. But much lore is passed down in families... I didn't realize that baroque Akoyas were to be had that early on--were they used in vintage necklaces?

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Hi Pearl Dreams, thank you for your quick reply. I haven't tried candling them yet. I'll have to see if I can find a strong enough light. It's entirely possible that they've been restrung at some point.

    Inherited Pearls from (Great?) Grandmother

Hello Pearl-Guide folks, My mother passed away a few years ago, and I received most of her jewelry. Her death hit me hard and I have not looked at the jewelry much, but recently started thinking it would be nice to have a pearl choker, and I vaguely remembered some family pearls I had not seen...
