That's an interesting method! Thanks Kat for adding to yours too. I've used the hot water method myself, but have never had to deal with especially stuck on pearls. This is a good one for the back pocket!

Those are actually polished turbo shells - they are often used in silver pieces (Strack, pg. 279)

It's certainly an interesting strand!

I've done strands with those pearl sizes and I've used #40 beaders secret and knotted either every 3 or 5 pearls. I've used bead wire too, but with pearls that small you need to get the 49-strand bead wire otherwise it'll be stiff and not drape very nicely. I prefer thread to wire. Hope this helps.

That doesn't seem surprising to me, but also lovely to know that border agents are also keeping this a priority among all the other much higher level wildlife poaching/smuggling that occurs.
