They appear to be dyed freshwater pearls. I've seen descriptions that use "Tahitian" as a color description rather than describing pearls from French Polynesia. You will see eBay listings that say "Tahitian black" for freshwater pearls.
Since you only need a few pearls, my first thought was a store on Etsy called druzydesign1. I have ordered from them and been pleased. Also on eBay as Ehret Design Gallery.

I find that I wear pendants more often than strands, but my lifestyle is casual. I prefer pendants in the summer, too, not as hot and sticky.
It seems like a job that would require travel, much like the artisans who do the nucleus implants. I believe they are contracted by the pearl farms. Or, maybe you mean grading for jewelry manufacturers? Everywhere you go, ask, ask, ask.
