it definitely has that 80's look, but these days the 80's are vintage and cool again. Obviously I prefer real pearls but anything "pearl" is good in my books.
unfortunately there isn't much of a second hand market for pearls, apart from estate sales and ebay. If you love the piece, wear it often and enjoy, but its not going to be an investment you can recoup at a later date.
I'd say $3000 would be an excellent price for 12-14mm round pearls with great luster and color. Just contact the vendor and make sure you're comfortable that you will receive the exact strand as pictured.
In the Hip Hop community guys have been wearing beads of all sorts for years, pearls shouldn't be too much of a stretch. I think its just that pearls are considered such a feminine gemstone, it scares most guys.
Are you saying that environmental conditions and the host mollusk has no effect on the color?
Also I'll bring up that flamingos turn pink because of the beta carotene in their diet, same goes for salmon flesh.
I was just about to say, its pretty unlikely you have a strand of dark golden South Sea pearls and not know what they are. Full strands of natural color pearls that dark aren't very common and do sell for 5 figures.
A picture would really help but my gut says you may have some dyed freshwater...
