Yes all the videos have sound. Try logging in on your phone to see if that helps? But sounds like a computer issue. Might need an update.

    Keshi pearls ?

Those are definitely tissue nucleated freshwater pearls. Keshi pearls would pearls that are non-nucleated pearls(not intentional), in other words a by-product of pearl production. They are usually small but not always.

    tahitian or not?

yup - looks like dyed freshwater pearls.

    What kind of pearl?

Looks like a cultured Tahitian pearl. Nice surface and if it is 16mm that's a very large pearl.

Are SSPs still sketchy to buy in Palawan?

Well that is the issue, most pearls(especially high quality ones) will not stay in Palawan. I didn't get a chance to look around the shops much when we visited the island, but what I did see wasn't good. Some of it clearly freshwater. But I get it, buying while on location makes it more fun...

Nacre depth requirement scrapped from January

I've seen them as well. If a Chinese freshwater pearl company has a couple of bags of really bad low grade Tahitians for sale... well you don't have to be a detective to figure it out.

Who wants to go to BALI?!?!

We can see in the back-end who's completed the course and final test. So as long as we can verify you were complete at the time of entry there's no issues.

I don't always like natural pearls, but when I do they look like that!

Nacre depth requirement scrapped from January

The fact is that you're in the minority on this one Wendy. When folks like Josh Humbert and Justin Hunter are all crying foul at the changes, I'd be inclined to listen. If you visit the original article and read the comments you'll see people invested in that industry are very concerned...

    Help IDing a few strands

I think 1-5 are freshwater, #6 has Tahitian-like blemishing -- so possibly Tahitian.

    Photographing Pearls

I have a Foldio as well, great little box and folds up nice and small when not in use. For apps the iphone program is really good. But there are some paid options that let you control the white balance, exposure, etc. . But I'm not sure they're really necessary.

A New Ginormous clam pearl found- dwarfs the "Pearl of Allah"

I get emails and FB message from fishermen in the Philippines at least once a month trying to sell me giant clam pearls. Some of them are HUGE and certainly rival the astetics of the pearl of Allah. I don't believe large clam pearls are that uncommon.

    New course on cultured pearls

That's right, PG members are getting the first look at the course. At the moment comments are sent to us, but in most cases we won't publish them -- unless it makes sense to make them visible.

Weird pearls -- does anyone know what they are?

Gotta agree. They look like poor quality Chinese Freshwater pearls.

Nacre depth requirement scrapped from January

It's not about certificates at all.... The issue is, that up until now they had set a standard of quality for their product. Anything that did not meet that criteria was destroyed(or in some cases smuggled out of country). By controlling the quality, they control the branding of Tahitian...

    Good morning! Is this special?

the shape and surface quality are excellent for an Abalone pearl. I think you've got a great find there, and worth a few bucks too!

Nacre depth requirement scrapped from January

This is horrible news and could fatally wound the Tahitian pearl market if they're not careful. The only thing this opens the door to is a flood of reject quality Tahitian pearls sold to the public. And ultimately reducing the perceived value/quality of the entire Tahitian pearl industry...

Graduated oval pearls from thrift store

Those are cultured freshwater pearls from China, not worth a heck of a lot. But hey, for $5 with a 14k clasp -- I think you got good deal!
