    Just bought...

There is nothing but a hunch right now. There can be seen no nucleus when candeling but I do not see any sighs of natural either. The naturals ought to be a bit more different types when light shines through. They seem just too devoid of "anything". Also the fluorescence is pretty even and green...

At last got hold of the purchase. It has been at my kid brothers olace for a few weeks. Orientals is an old expression here in Scandinavia to distinguish natural from cultured. The pearls are strung on silk. The silk is snapped and 11 pearls are in a separate bag (good objects for microscopy)...

    Fluorescence

How common/possible is it to find greenish fluorescence in natural salt water pearls? Does it even happen or can greenish fluorescence in pearls act as a very strong indication ore even proof of cultured?

The pearls are not delivered yet but I will post more images when they arrive. It needs to be restrung as the silk is torn and some of the pearls are in a bag. For sure there will be a bunch of images shot. Pearls have to be cleaned and restrung for wife pretty soon.

    Every day pearls

I drilled from opposite sides not to risk anything. Also started with a 1 mm drill bit and increased with half mm increments until reaching about 3 mm.

    Every day pearls

Here are a couple of shots of my and and my wifes every day pearls. They have been worn more or less for five years. The funky yellow tone in wifes twin baroque SS is not nearly as pronounced in real life. Sorry about the dust on my tahitian. The twin baroque is about 13.5 x 20.0 mm. The...

Candeling of very old, supposedly cultured pearls

The "funneling" is seen mostly on the bigger pearls. Maybe 30 to 35% of the total number.

Candeling of very old, supposedly cultured pearls

Now when cleaning the pearls (one by one) I noticed this in one of the bigger pearls. Layering that can be seen seems to continue throughout. One can also see the "funnel" at drill hole entrance. Remember drill hole diameter is about 0.50 mm. Hard to reach in without endoscope.

Candeling of very old, supposedly cultured pearls

Here is an x-ray image of some of the pearls (shot by a dentist). Are the shadows at the arrows positive proof of nucleated pearls? Are we in that case supposing all pearls in the necklace are nucleated? Edit: Also want to add that most of the drill holes are less than 0.5 mm in diameter.

    Raman spectrometer

Both Alberto and Mikko are great guys. I use the Raman primarily for gemstones but the pearl side of gemology and photoluminiscence spectrometry is a very interesting field.
