Bought 3 strands and now sleepless in Los Angeles. Help!

This has been a very intersting thread. So out of curiousity I dug out my bulk strands of dyed Chinese freshwater "peacock" pearls to see if there are any of these strange pits. Yes there are, and quite a few, I took a few hurried photos, some of them not very clear, but they do have pits very...

Agree Caitlin,a few of my Tahitian pearls have those same funny little pits, and I have not seen that type in freshwater pearls at all.

Bought 3 strands and now sleepless in Los Angeles. Help!

Hi there sleepless, I am not one of the experts on this forum, but having just acquired some good quality Tahitian pearls recently, I can tell you when rubbed together mine do not have that gritty feel, in other words the tooth or scratch test just is not appllicable to Tahitian pearls...

report of pearl in pacific oyster

Gee what a big headline for such a not so big story. Maybe I am a little blind, but where is the great luster on that little sucker? Granted, if I had found it, I would think it was the greatest treasure in the world.

Your first pearls - when and how?

Pattye, you reminded me to include my second "first" pearls as well. The first pearls I actually bought for myself , well it is a toss up between a single strand graduated Mikimoto, don't know the grade as I bought it on the secondary market, silver clasp with the authentic M clamshell and they...

    Metal Bead Nucleus?

There are unfortunately some "pearls" being sold that are ground up pearls and fish scales applied in layers over a bead, although I thought they used a glass bead and not a metal. This type of man made pearl will often pass the tooth test. Really do need those photos.

can anyone identify or tell me a bit about these please

Dizzie, that was my thought also, and in one of the photos it looked to me like one of the pearls was added to the chain with a little too much silver sticking out of one of the drill holes, usually they would have been tighter there. On this note, many of the costume jewelry makers in the USA...

    Perth fashion designer's Grammy winner

Wow, thanks Cyril for posting that, hers was my favorite dress of the event and I did not know they were "real" pearls, it is a truly beautiful gown, and brings to mind the fine dressmaking skills of the early to mid 1900's. I started out in fashion designing in my youth, and spent more time at...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

Thanks Jeremy, I just tried to prick one of them, slippery little suckers, almost stabbed myself, they are just too shiny slick to do a simple prick, so I got brave and tried to gash a tiny place with the pin several times (not recommended of course) and it produced very faint lines but did not...

    Need Help Identifying Maker

I Found It ! Found the maker of my lovely cultured pearl necklace, totally by accident, a bracelet with that dangly little metal tag with the artsy M showed up while I was cruising First Dibs for pearls, and I found her website. The designer is Marina J and she has a lovely site with her...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

Thanks Jeremy, they did not come directly from Tahiti, they are from an online seller (not from China) that has a good reputation ( I just hate to mention names as I don't think it is fair to the seller). So I do not know where they got them, but they do buy atthe big shows in Tucson and have...

    How to wear pearl jewellery...

So there is a "wrong" way to wear pearls? I think not. I can't image any occasion when pearls of some type could not be worn. OK, maybe not while in a sweat exercising in a gym, or in a chlorine water swimming pool. I bet there are even some people who might sleep in them! I had on my black...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

Thanks Pattye so now I feel better about this purchase, but a little troubled as I have been depending on the "rub two together" test for my first test in pearl evaluation (actually second test, I do the cold touch test first, and these were ice cold). This means I may have passed up some "real...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

Here are photos, taken on a silvery gray background, all without flash under my Ott natural spectrum light, the last two photos with flash. I thought none of them passed the tooth test, but just found one that does for sure. This is my first time in my life to even touch a Tahitian pearl, so...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

Thank You Lagoon Island, you lost me a little with the ratio thing, I am really new to evaluating pearls and studying on my own. Guess I have not made it to that chapter yet! I do get most of what you are saying, and since posting this question have been searching Strack's book, and reading up...

    Tahitian Pearls Not Gritty?

I am holding some baroque Tahitian cultured pearls, large sizes, purchased from a seller of good reputation who is known to this forum (not PP just to make that clear). They are beautiful, lustrous, cold, and heavy, all the things I would expect, with overtones, etc. Nothing at all to raise any...
