A puzzle - balancing ethics and profit.

Ah yes - you're correct, i checked the silk and it was imported from another country and simply re-sold by this company. It makes sense.

A puzzle - balancing ethics and profit.

Between Canada and USA, of course we have NAFTA - I wasn't referring to purchases coming into countries that are being sent from countries with which there is a shared free-trade-agreement...though I realize now that I did not specify this. That said, I just ordered around $100 worth of silk...

Apologies if I gave the impression that brokerage fees where associated with government - because (as you've already said), they're not. I simply meant that brokerage fees paid are a tax deductible business expense (in Canada at least anyways).

A puzzle - balancing ethics and profit.

Speaking strictly from a Canadian perspective as well, imported items are subjected to the following additional charges; 1) Duty @ 8% of shipments claimed value 2) Taxes @ either 5% GST and/or 7% to 9% PST, or 13% HST (depending on which Province you live in). 3) Brokerage - this is a fee...

    taking pictures of pearl jewellery

This is a GREAT idea - figuring out the right lighting, white balance, filtering and settings just to get a picture that still actually looks like the pearls do in reality can take a long time to figure out IMO - it would be awesome to have a couple of described setups (including type of...

What an Ebay pearl buyer needs to know~

I agree on this point, but also with a caution - I know of sellers who intentionally put up a bunch of $0.99 items (or less) purely for the purpose of obtaining a high satisfaction rating (usually by having friends buy these items and register positive feedback), so that they can sell higher...

What an Ebay pearl buyer needs to know~

well I'm brand new here (as a poster)...but I'd say any claims for the pearls being anything other than freshwater, the seller should be able to provide an image of the paperwork proving it (recent appraisal or paperwork from the company it was originally purchased from). I'd also say that any...

New Business Startup & Retail Industry

Hi Caitlin Thanks for pointing me towards the "Pearls" book - I'll definitely look into it - and I do already know I will be able to turn a profit. I've already been China (Hong Kong and Beijing), visited a couple markets and farms there. I'm also receiving high quality pearls from China and...

New Business Startup & Retail Industry

I'll start by apologizing if this is the wrong place to ask this sort of question. I've spent almost the last two years "getting into" pearls and I believe I'm ready to take the next step by launching a business. However, in preparing my business plan (for the bank), I cannot seem to find any...
