I'm going to be brave and attempt drilling a FW pearl, but first... recommendations?

    I think I've been had...

Well hopefully the agreement is not violent - lol - I don't usually chime in on board threads like this because it really boils my blood. And you're right Caitlin, sellers exploit the fact that most do not take even five minutes to do a Google search and arm themselves with even the slightest...

    I think I've been had...

Yes I totally agree - it's an absolute shame, the level of dishonesty that exists. That said though, and this is not an excuse, nor does it make it any better but...let's say I pay $100 for AAA 7-8mm Akoya pearl necklace...which turns out to actually be a AA 7-8mm Freshwater pearl necklace...

    I think I've been had...

Oh I agree with you completely...it doesn't matter how much someone pays if they paid for X but got Y...and though I'm not American, my impression of much of this whole situation has much to do with the price paid. Let's be honest here...how do sellers selling false products get away with it...

I'm going to be brave and attempt drilling a FW pearl, but first... recommendations?

I purchased this horizontal pearl drill about 7 months ago... At the time I bought it, I also decided to buy extra drill bits - 100 each of 0.7mm, 0.8mm and 0.9mm bits, and 50 of each 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 1.7mm, 2.0mm and 2.5mmbits. Personally, I LOVE this pearl drill; it's solid and accurate. My...

What kind of pearls are these?

I have to agree with Caitlin - my wife has a necklace of virtually the exact same shape, colour and size of pearls as are in your picture...and they're absolutely freshwater pearls. I believe that shape is most commonly referred to as "potato" (but I could be wrong)...and they're quite common...

    Neep help selecting pearls!

$150 should be more than enough to get up to a AA+ 7-8mm freshwater 18" necklace (not including shipping), depending on where you buy.

Distinguish between salt and freshwater pearls with mg strips and hydrocloric acids?

Ah yes, i had totally forgotten about chromatography...nice catch. But I agree with the OP starter...it would be fantastic to be able to determine freshwater versus akoya definitively (and without destroying it) once the pearl has been made into jewelry...other than by taking it to a lab.

Distinguish between salt and freshwater pearls with mg strips and hydrocloric acids?

Just to provide a little deeper explanation...according to the mathematics of chemistry, (again assuming the HCL is of a concentration high enough to impact the pearl), the HCL would cause a molecular breakdown of the calcium, the manganese and itself (being hydrogen and chlorine). The...

Distinguish between salt and freshwater pearls with mg strips and hydrocloric acids?

For those interested, I also just confirmed with my wife (who's in her 3rd year of University, studying as a chemist)... So...if you were able to achieve an HCL dilution ratio which was still strong enough to dissolve a micro-layer of the pearl without causing any visible damage, the HCL would...

Distinguish between salt and freshwater pearls with mg strips and hydrocloric acids?

I may be wrong on this, but it was my understanding that both freshwater and saltwater pearls contains trace amounts of manganese...just that freshwater pearls contain higher trace amounts of the element. I myself am not aware of any home 'acid test' that would be able to distinguish the...

appraisal from the seller for real?

Being the first to reply, if I read your message correctly...you have two (2) Akoya pearl bracelets made up of 7mm "Hanadama" quality pearls. My first questions (before being able to provide an opinion of the 'appraised value') would be; - are the pearls 6.5-7mm or 7-7.5mm in size? - what is...

    Southsea pearls or not?

For $225, you could get a stunning pair of top quality 9.5 to 10mm white freshwater pearl earrings with rose overtone on heavy-weight 14k gold studs...if you're paying $225 for the whole lot (of what's pictured), I agree that it's possible they are all shell pearl...or lower quality fwp

Does anyone know of Divina Pearls?

Honestly...unless it's an actual Auction House website...or a company of high reputation (and/or also advertises that is buys/sells estate jewelry), I would have a really tough time believing any claim regarding 'estate' jewelry. I believe they're vintage inspired designs that are being branded...
