    Stinky pearls--help!

I bought an inexpensive baroque akoya necklace from Overstock, and now I know why it was so cheap. Aside from being "bi-color" (i.e. uneven nacre), it exhibited a nasty odor. I've soaked and washed the pearls, thrown away the string it came with and temporarily put the pearls on a beading wire...

The developers of this platform should add "a thumbs up" feature. Because I "like" "like" "like" every way you wore those pearls.

    Reliquary-inspired pearl earrings

There. The woman who was selling the earrings let me buy and pay for them over 6 months. And within hours of posting photos on Facebook, someone else offered to buy them from me. Now, to see if I can have them converted into earrings with jackets....

    Reliquary-inspired pearl earrings

There are no seed pearls on the first pair of earrings, Pattye. Think of tamborin as the trompe l'oile of jewelry. Our craftsmen of old didn't have gems, so they shaped the gold to look like diamonds, rubies, and pearls.

    Reliquary-inspired pearl earrings

Back when The Philippines was a colony of Spain (1521-1898), the populace was so religious, even their taste in jewelry was influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. Typical of this were gold "tamborin" earrings. They were inspired by the ornate filigree that adorned rosaries and reliquaries...

This little piggy went to Greenhills market

Thanks, Kat, Pattye, and Andrea. My local pearl markets, Greenhills and Market Market, have become more interesting lately. Pearls that I thought I'd never see here--metallic fireballs, nucleated ripples, exotic keshis--are coming in. Probably not the best quality, but some are fairly decent...

This little piggy went to Greenhills market

I went to Greenhills in search of 3-4mm round FWPs, which I did not find. Instead I came home with something better: color-shifting baroque FWPs, and metallic fireballs that can hold their own with natural color akoyas. How can I possibly concentrate on work tomorrow, knowing these pearls are...

    multicolor tahitians

Both appear to have good luster and nice variety of body and overtone colors. I am partial to the strand with smaller pearls because (1) there seem to be less blemishes (rings); (2) the elongation of the drop isn't highly pronounced, and (3) the pearls are well-matched (by shape, at least)...

    Mother's Day haul

My ripples are here! I bought them unstrung and worked on them as soon as they arrived. I added gold-tone spacers and yellow-gold freshwater pearls between the largest ripples. The funny thing is that IRL, the strand has a pale but strong gold color. But in photos, the pink and mauve overtones...
