    Pearl and Gemstones

Thank you! I'll need to redo the turquoise necklace. Use solid 14k rose gold chain instead the plated and make a headpin from a thicker wire.

    Pearl and Gemstones

Back to one of my favorite threads: Family pictures. I finally got another Fijian keshi to complete the set, wonderfully warm metallic at one tip, then diving from earthy golds into olive, aubergine and ending in an emerald peacock at the other. It went into the suspense between 14k rose gold...

Which of these would you choose?

Right, that's easy! I'm all about lustre and metallicity! Plus thick nacre, so tops Akoya for me.

    Pearl and Gemstones

In my case I used the freeware program Blender to model the design from scratch, then sent the final file to a company who does the wax 3D printing and casting in silver. It was about $25 for the pair in sterling silver in this case.

Please help me ID my mabe: Japanese/chinese fwp, Pteria ...?

Thank you Eric! The back is quite curved, looks like a separate, glued piece. They are not quite as round I think as the 3/4 mabe shown here: http://www.malukupearl.com/contents/en-us/d3.html ... but definitely quite roundish.

Please help me ID my mabe: Japanese/chinese fwp, Pteria ...?

Thank you so much for this link, GemGeek! I was wondering about the Pteria Penguin option too, but I didn't know that they'd fluoresce as well. I would love to get more opinions vs. freshwater or saltwater here. When I asked Kojima's Sarah she doubted that they were Japanese but considered an...

    Pearl and Gemstones

Okay, I'll go again: I finally got around taking pictures of my dear blue-ish Sea of Cortez pearl earrings. I had my goldsmith add a tiny clasp to the herradura findings I got from the farm. I love how the overall look is still delicate but I can exchange my pearls with whatever looped treasure...

    Pearl and Gemstones

Hogging away on this thread.... sorry, not sorry. :) Here are the seafoam Tahitian spike earrings I made. I’m very much at the beginning of all of this, so I 3D modelled my design in the computer and had it cast/3D printed in silver (because I love hinged jewellery and my metal...

    Pearl and Gemstones

So, I couldn't resist seeing these "natural colour Japanese freshwater mabe" in person. Whatever they are, they are pretty. I just wish I got three to cut one up and see the interior, I'd be so curious about the colour and materials of the nucleus and the nacre thickness. Maybe I need to...

    Baby Akoyas

I'm curious as well. What would your do with 1.5 Akoyas. Do they come drilled?

    Pearl and Gemstones

Very interesting hypotheses. I'll try to find out more. I wonder how thin the nacre would have to be to let a colour shine through?
