    Pearls?

Welcome! They look translucent to me, and that makes me think of chalcedony if they are heavy. Another wild guess is milky glass. Have you tried the teeth test? That usually does the trick. :32:

    Purple fade

Hmm, your theory is different from what I learned from the first-line insider with Edison pearls. Your reply to my post changed my mind. I didn't expect those answers and info could get denied here before even heard:dunno:. That's fine. Saved me trouble to ask for permission to share more...

    Purple fade

Turned out the source of the bright and dense purple color is from the hybrid with a third species of mussel. And there is a fourth species, and there is more... The commonly known Hyriopsis cumingii and Japanese Hyriopsis schlegeli hybrid is undoubtedly correct, yet dated. And there are...

    Newbie

Welcome, gregbenson.m@gmail.com! :fest30: I can't agree more with CortezPearls on "return it" and "Consider another pearl seller." I always encourage people who are at the beginning of their learning curves to stick to reputable vendors. Wish you find the right strand soon enough for Christmas! :D

Posting my Edison strand here... Hoping it never fades...

Thank you very much for your kind words, echo and SurfnSci. :) echo, yes, not only Tahitians are chameleons - Edisons, too, aren't they? Let me post another picture that I took yesterday. I think this pic shows the colors better. (I knew I should have used white background to show color most...

Posting my Edison strand here... Hoping it never fades...

Thanks, echo ! Took one shot for you! It looks not as colorful or lustrous on my sweater though. Might be the color of my sweater, might be the front camera of my cell phone, but I am not a good photographer anyways. :o

Posting my Edison strand here... Hoping it never fades...

Thank you, pearlescence and Charlotta2.0. I bet I am not the only one on this forum who bought a strand like this. It cost me $300+, which I don't usually pay for a freshwater temp strand. Hope it goes fine. :veryhappy:

    Purple fade

You are right in that "you don't have to feed" the mussels - but the farmers do "feed" the ponds/lakes etc. And they probably do add special element(s?) for the colorful Edison's, despite not pigments directly. I just had a chat with my friend who is authoritative enough for this topic and got...

    Purple fade

Have to say technologies develop fast and things "said over and over" are simply repeating themselves year after year. One person's marker pen doesn't explain the natural purple color pearls - or, was s/he being sarcastic ?

    Purple fade

I read some saying those mollusks were fed with pigments and that was why the pearls got jewel tones. Are those pigments able to go through the whole way and end up in conchiolin? Maybe?? :22:

Posting my Edison strand here... Hoping it never fades...

This strand was bought right after I bought "My second Edison pearl", actually even before I received that pearl, because it REALLY hit my heart. In short, I got it > 6 months ago. It's the strand just when I finished stringing I noticed one piece of the clasp was deformed and had to start over...

    Purple fade

Thanks for sharing the pictures and the article, pearlescence . Very interesting topic. Would love to know whether all the natural purple will eventually and how long the quicker ones will fade to white. It would also be interesting to know whether it's the dyed ones or the natural ones fading...

2020 and 2021 harvests at Perlas del Mar de Cortez

Yesterday my husband excitedly told me he saw a very pretty and unique pearl online that he wanted to buy me but the price was tooooo high, over $3k. I immediately thought of that one biggest pearl in the second row... And then he showed me on the website, it was exactly that one! :lmao:Nice...

Thank you, Douglas, you are always so helpful... I just saw your link and placed order, and then I saw lisa c's reply... Although a bit disappointed no pearls to come, I am still glad I paid something to the organization. After all, the course was wonderful and free. :D
