    Quick Mikimoto question

I don't know the answer to your question but that listing's pictures scream fake to me — the craftsmanship, the pearls, the metal component's design. I mean it has to look at least like this one to dare to claim itself Mikimoto, right?

Near round/Off round Akoya pearls or freshwater pearls?

They look like Akoya pearls to me, too. Decades ago the nacre of Akoya pearls was much thicker, so that could mean "a higher percentage" of not perfectly round. Btw great size for vintage strands, center pearls 10.5mm!

    Mystery Vintage Freshwater Pearls

How do you know they are FWP? I feel like the white are Akoyas and the other strand Akoya keshis. Waiting for others' opinion. Very interesting pic of the inside, reminding me of when I lost my first tooth decades ago 🤪. Thanks for sharing!

    Looking for Large Pendants?

Many kinds of pearls come in large sizes. Would you like to share a picture of the one you saw so that we can have a better idea what you are looking for? Update: I did a quick search and saw a big white pendant. That’s probably a baroque Edison pearl, or a baroque white south sea pearl which...

Need help with this pearl necklace

Still, a cert now needs to be cert-ed, by human or bot. Using ChatGPT is a brilliant idea, but you still need to read extra, and AI isn’t always correct or complete. For example, it concluded the necklace didn’t match the cert, but wasn’t able to tell that was a forged cert. I won’t call it...

Need help with this pearl necklace

Yea it's really becoming a problem. Not everyone has adequate language skills or expertise to identify the certificates. How ironic there's one day a cert needs to be cert-ed! And here we are.:ROFLMAO:

Is "3.5 momme necklace" a name specific to "those" necklaces?

This one happened to come with some documentation.

Is "3.5 momme necklace" a name specific to "those" necklaces?

Thanks very much. Sounds like it's not strictly bound to history. :D

Need help with this pearl necklace

I see where you were talking about now. It has nothing to do with Katakana or Chinese, not sure why you brought that up, I simply didn't read the cert far down enough, as I didn't expect a cert would conflict with itself – I assumed it was an authentic certificate. "ブルー" does mean blue, so you...

Found in a box of costume jewellery…

This looks like a strand of vintage Japanese akoya to me. I am not familiar with natural pearls so I cannot spot which one or two are natural. Cool clasp!

Is "3.5 momme necklace" a name specific to "those" necklaces?

Thanks to this forum, I've read so much about the 3.5 momme style necklace. My question is, is this "3.5 momme" name exclusively used to refer to those ones made in Japan and brought to the U.S. after WWII? I do know 1 momme = 3.75g, so technically if a pearl necklace of any style weighs...

    PSL certification

Welcome to the forum! I believe I've seen both online, so I guess either way is fine, but I am no expert on this. What does your vendor suggest?

Need help with this pearl necklace

No offense but I thought "彩雲珠" was the one with blue body color. This certificate posted here says "彩凛珠", meaning best quality of white akoya pearl under 6mm. Basically "彩凛珠" is like Hanadama quality in smaller size, and "彩雲珠" is like Madama quality in smaller size. The table below is from...

    Are these dyed?

I think you are probably right. Several pearls have a spot where the nacre is broken and the inside black organic matter underneath gets exposed — that’s what makes the akoya pearls look blue. On a few pearls I can also see the uneven distribution of the black matter under the nacre. The second...

    StarryPearl's thread

How is everyone doing? It's finally winter, and we've got a little snow here. Reminded me to share this pendant of Pearl Snowflake❄️ — how I wish it could snow pearls🌨️... I'd be more than happy to buy a helmet and coat it with sponge and soft cotton fabric outside, so that pearls don't get hurt...

What kind of pearls are these?

Welcome to the forum! Nice luster! They look like vintage Akoya to me. The 2nd pic's character means "bliss" or "good fortune" -- it's considered much bigger (and usually longer lasting) than "good luck", which has other characters for that meaning. The 3rd pic's character looks like an old...

    Help measuring pearls

There are small softwares that can do the measurements on images. You measure one pearl of each strand using the software, then do a simple math. I used to use one but don't recall the name unfortunately. I'm sure you can find one using Google. Another way for an accurate answer is this little...

Possibly (almost definitely?) scammed?, 14mm freshwater pearl strand

Welcome to the forum! That's a really sweet idea for your mom's birthday! When I just saw the title and the price, I was thinking very high quality Edison pearls, which are indeed freshwater. But after opening the pictures, I think these are non-nucleated Chinese freshwater pearls, in other...
