What do think ? Natural or not ?

Thank you all for your kind words ! My necklace came back last week, all cleaned and re-stringed on silk and I love it ! I've changed my mind that it was too small for me and my dear daughter will have to wait until her sixteen birthday to receive it (I have 10+ years to go hehehe :-). On its...

    Manly Pearls

Adding to the thread with a candid shot of one of my good friend. He recently left the corporate world and now let the shirt collar open and sleeves up to reveal his everyday pearls... Tahitians only but it's a start :-) Now I need to convince my husband :-)

Exciting looking box of old pearls...

I'm really a beginner (only 1 year with pearl addiction), but I think I read somewhere on this forum that old pearls with large drill holes are a positive sign for naturals :-) in any case, just going through the box is a treat !!

    Candled Natural Pearls

Will do ! You will laugh about my set up (blue Gap gift box, keychain led light and an old vodka tumbler to hold the light). The set up works fine, but it's taking photo "macro mode" in the dark and without flash that is challenging....

    Candled Natural Pearls

Hi Caitlin, Yes, you can do this with any pearl (cultured, fake) and it's actually quite interesting and helpful to see what a beaded pearl look like. I could not do any pictures (my set up is not as elaborate) but i've educated myself by playing with all my all my pearls. With akoyas, you can...

    Candled Natural Pearls

Hi Dawn, Congrats on the pictures ! the first one of the first ring in particular is beautiful ! I'm not expert, but I spent quite a few hours trying the candling. I failed to take any good picture as I don't have a microscope. Like you, I got stuck with interpreting what I was seeing.... One...

    My Latest Expedition

Thank you Dave, for the clarification. There is a beautiful paradox in this thread: On one hand, I'm relieved to know that those pearls are indeed natural (in part because they "present" so much like naturals :-) ; on the other hand, I'm excited about the possibility of "reasonably priced"...

    My Latest Expedition

It took me a while to realize that those pearls are actually cultured... (You are very much associated with natural in my mind). The metaphor of free range aquaculture is great.... Now i'm picturing a "U pick" sign just like in blueberries farms ;-) They are gorgeous pearls, and I'm very...

    My Latest Expedition

Wait wait.... How did you manage to harvest that many pearls in one expedition ? (I'm assuming a few days) I thought the incidence for pearl in oyster was 1 in 12000.... is it different for mussels ? Did you just open thousands of mussels and found the pearls ? The sheer quantity is amazing to me !

The 7 strand natural pearls that sold for over 9 millions $ in Geneva yesterday

Bulgari is my absolute favorite jeweler. I love their design and also use of colored gems. Those earrings are breathtaking !! I knew that Bulgari was mixing and matching colors for gem earrings, but never thought they did it with pearl too... must be a custom piece ... Woaw ! incredible shape...

    Funny old pearl...

It's really pretty Helen ! do you think it's cultured ?(re: your comment on " has a cavity through this larger hole like you would get if the bead and nacre had separated")... if it was, the bead would still be inside wouldn't it ? Any chance it's an abalone pearl with really light color ...

My new "old" natural pearl earrings ! before and after photos

Thanks Dave and Lisa ! I'll get going on the mosaic as soon as I have a couple hours. Just back from a long Thanksgiving week-end and need to catch work first :-( once, I'm done with this one, I'll do a test with my new pearl (see vintage abalone ? post) and compare it with one I bought from...

Opinions and advices kindly requested - vintage abalone pearl ?

Back from thanksgiving holiday, and catching up on the forum ! thanks dmj and Helen for your answers ! I really think it's an abalone pearl, maybe a pearl than someone found and create this brooch as a keepsake, as the workmanship is really poor but the pearl is really nice. @Helen: I dipped...

Opinions and advices kindly requested - vintage abalone pearl ?

Yesterday night, we had a wonderful pre thanksgiving dinner with delicious oysters.... but no pearl this time :D However, another oyster came by mail, and there was a nice surprise.... This vintage mother of pearl brooch is 5 cm; the pearl is 0.8X0.6; gritty. Color is varying with the light ...
