Opinions and advices kindly requested - vintage abalone pearl ?

Here are some new pictures of the freed pearl. The last pic is from my little (but growing little by little) collection, with the green one being a abalone from Antz. The colorings are similar don't you think ? Is this enough to confirm a presumption of abalone pearl for this rescued pearl ...

My new "old" natural pearl earrings ! before and after photos

I took a break from the color palette, (still on the learning curve for the software) but will come back to it. Those pearls are very difficult to candle. I could not take good pictures with the light through. But I took some new close ups, and the results are really cool I think.

    Candled Natural Pearls

LOL this is exactely what I did for regular photos and I got the best pearls close ups I ever took ;);) (will post in another thread) Following Dawn's example, I'll hire an assistant (my son!) tomorrow to try to take a picture of pearl candling with another Iphone. But think of this scenario...

    Candled Natural Pearls

I love, love, love this thread ! The candling, the comparison with xrays, the methodology, and the group spirit of giving and contributing to spread more knowledge. I' m so frustrated to not be able to take meaningful pictures of my pearls ... Meanwhile, i found a portable candling set up while...

    Candled Natural Pearls

I updated my earlier post and added a video that might interest you all. It shows how rendering software created for the video game industry can be applied to the human body scans (I believe based on CT scans, but should also work for digital xrays scans). Now imagine a natural pearl instead of...

    Candled Natural Pearls

I did some more research too with new keywords, and also read the GIA paper " Pearl Expedition Yields Significant Result" (oct 2013) that GG posted in a parallel thread, and that you also posted above. so here is a short timeline of techno evolution: 2010: this GIA paper"]GIA 2010 report...

    Candled Natural Pearls

No I meant the GIA report that Dave posted The Microradiographic Structures in NBCP Appendix A - page 19-20 I've tried to snip them as pictures to post them here. This is OK, since the GIA link to the report is on this same post. Hopefully, this will work Photo Credits : The...

What is a "soufflure de perle"?

@ Wendy: Thank you for your answer! It makes sense that it's likely to be a natural based on age. I got thrown off by "soufflure" that also means some type of " bubble" (like air blown into a pearl like a glass bubble) and the similarity of the word "souffl?" (blown). I did not like them at...

    Candled Natural Pearls

Yes, thank you Dave for the white paper, it was enlightening ! and this discussion is super interesting! I too was fascinated to read about the “grey areas” of pearl identification. But what really stood out for me is how this industry / GIA is still relying on old technology (Xray). If I’m not...

    So pretty, but so...undrilled!

Voting for the skulls too.... and I'm not a skull person, but it gives a nice "edginess" to the "sweetness"

What is a "soufflure de perle"?

Hi all, Do you know by chance what are "soufflure de perle" ? Are they "soufflee pearls" like the one that were recently sold on PP (hollow inside) or natural pearls? I was intrigued when I saw a post from Dawn about a beautiful pin...

    Candled Natural Pearls

[On another note, I have several naturals yet to be candled, but like amber, it's my hope I'll find a pearl with a discernible critter inside it, perhaps a crab or snail] That would be fascinating! On my side, I'd be also interested in finding traces of tissue grafting in cultured pearls ...

    Candled Natural Pearls

I've simplified my setup (klenex box upside down with a led flashlight) and took picture with my Iphone. The result in the picture is not necessarely what I see with the naked eye. In this case, the bead is more visible on the picture. Here is what I think is a well worn akoya earring (probably...
