I used a dremel-type tool b/c it was easier to hold steady than my full size drill. Used it with 1mm diamond coated bits, which lasted for maybe just a few pearls if I remember right. A very small amount of blood was shed.

Some of the arabian show halters are a sight to behold: I can easily imagine one drenched in pearls. All my pearl intuition tells me there has been at least one princely someone whose halter had real gems and pearls. I would love to see one!
