Thank you for sharing your photos, jeg. Maybe Bunny and the Traveling Pearl found a place they'd like to stay? They should have said something.

    Decisions Decisions

My Akoya rope isn't graded -- they are baroque pearls. I like baroque Akoyas with their little fish tails and it's not often that I find white. The nacre is very good, so they have nice tones.

    Decisions Decisions

I think it depends on why you want a rope and how you plan to wear it? I have a 48" Akoya rope that I usually wear doubled or tripled up; the pearls are around 7mm. I suggest freshwater pearls for the rope. I would buy Hanadama pearls for a strand that would be worn closer to the face.

    Pearls and Cosmetics

I find it amusing that we'd put something on our skin that we wouldn't put on our pearls.

    Blue baroque akoya questions

So true. My baroque Akoyas appear more blue than the off round, so that may be a factor.

    Thoughts on a humble strand

The necklace came out really nice! I like the gradient colors, and your knots look better than mine. They are certainly interesting pearls, different colors, and some look metallic. Wear it in good health, and be proud of your find!

    Questions about pearl harvesting process

I'd be curious about the process. I've watched Kamoka short films --carefully taking one pearl at a time-- and it seems like it would take a long, long time to harvest any great quantity. How many pearls are taken in one day? I'm guessing harvesters work in teams? How many pearls are rejects...

    Questions about pearl harvesting process

I think South Sea pearls are harvested in June, July and August, which are the coolest months in that hemisphere.

    Judith Ripka Pearl Quality

Judith Ripka had two jewelry lines -- the upscale, diamonds and platinum items for celebrities, which is where she gained fame, and the sterling, CZ lines sold on TV shopping networks. Even though Judith retired, her jewelry line continues on JTV. So, check your hallmarks, I guess?

    Are these real pearls?

My initial thought is that these are synthetic pearls. The swirls are suspicious.

    Are these south sea pearls?

My thoughts exactly. I like the bean clasps for ease of use and they seem secure.

    Abalone “pearls”

I have several abalone shells, too. I think you can cut out the blister and make jewelry but then you've ruined the shell. Along the West Coast, abalone have been hit particularly hard by overfishing, the decline of the kelp forest, warming ocean temperatures and other impacts. Treasure your...

Are pearl prices on the rise?

My thought is that there are plenty of international markets for pearls, so the farmers should be okay. It's the lowly US buyers who may whine a bit. It may be like the tariffs on cars. The tariff on a complete car is higher than the tariffs on parts.

    Differentiate saltwater from freshwater pearls

I'd bet money the white strand with turquoise and apatite nuggets is Honora and was sold on QVC. So, freshwater. The black pearls are freshwater, too. And the pink. You learn by looking at a lot of pearls. Tahitian pearls look ... oily. I once saw a single white South Sea pendant that was...
