Do a search on Aliexpress for 'wish pearl'. thousands of brightly dyed freshwater pearls in obviously dead shells. Totally yuck.

That can also be a burr when the two drill holes don't quite align. With a cheap drill bit it will bend just a fraction, not enough to break but enough for it to go out of alignment. This happens when the pearl is rounded so the tip skids just as it touches and before it bites into the nacre.

While there are some pearl wholesalers in Bangkok my impression (from attending a couple of their gem shows) is that they aren't really very oriented (no pun) towards pearls. GIA in Bangkok does have some world-class pearl expertise though.
