hello, I am not sure this is the right forum, so please forgive me if I should put this somewhere else!

My grandfather brought pearls from Japan in the 40's (unsure about the date). They are unknotted, with original box, original cardboard box as wellm and certificate. I am posting pics, but the cert says

Sakata Cultured Pearl
Sakata Pearl Co. LTD
22-7.3 Chome, Shia
Minato-Ku Tokyo

There are 56 pearls. I cant find anything about the company other than they are probably defunct. I am trying to find out how much they are worth or how to go about getting them appraised. Could anyone give me any guidance? Hopefully the pics are clear enough, but I could try again if not.

Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Very pretty cultured akoya (saltwater) pearls! The certificate says it's a choker, so I'm guestimating the pearls are about 6.5mm?

It's great that you have the certificate and box showing provenance. Hang onto those!

Are you thinking of stringing them for your own use? I encourage you to do that! The fact that they are still unstrung means they have not had wear and tear over the years, and should be in great shape! What a great choker they would make!

As far as value, normally we tell people to look at completed listings on eBay to see what similar items sold for. But I don't know how often you would see listings for never-strung, never-worn vintage pearls. I would think they would have a higher value than strands that had been worn. Perhaps someone else will have a suggestion. Many jewelers don't know much about pearls and may not give you a good idea of value.

Also, there is a difference between replacement value (for insurance purposes, if you keep them) and sale value (which would be lower.)

If the strand is 16", when knotted between each pearl and with a clasp it should come to approx an 18" necklace. How long is the unfinished strand?
