Lauren Bacall was exquisitely beautiful, and even as she aged considerably, she was always out and about, glamorously dressed and full of vigor. I used to run into her when I lived in Manhattan, and later, on visits. The first time, I was eating dinner at the Russian Tea Room and I recognized her voice and looked up. She was sitting right across from me. Such a voice. We used to joke about my being a magnet for her, but I think she lived in the same part of town and we both went out a lot. The last time I saw her, I was at a Broadway show with Mom, who followed her for four blocks before I pried her away to go back in the opposite direction to our hotel. She was just that fascinating! Thanks for the photos.

I understand she lived in the Dakota building. Same building where John Lennon lived and died. She was a hoot.

So sad to see this. What a good actress and one that loved pearls too.

She had so much style even at 19!

"You know you don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow."

She was one of the great actresses of a by-gone age, and will be sadly missed.

A lifelong genuine pearl lover!. She was a very sophisticated pearl lover, too judging from the blue baroques! Thanks for the photos, Mikeyy and for the great story, GemGeek!

Thanks. The morning of the show-sighting with Mom, Walter Cronkite smiled at me. I had been telling Mom that all she had to do was look, and she would see famous people, too, but missing Walter Cronkite was too much for her. We split up for the day and when she stopped in a restaurant in the afternoon for a snack, she looked up and Martin Short was sitting at the next table for two on the banquette, facing her. He was in town to promote his mini-series Merlin (years ago). Later that day, we saw Martin Short attending the same play as Lauren Bacall. So she believed me after that. Unfortunately, spotting famous people doesn't work as well in San Diego as it does in LA and NYC.
