Very Sad News ~ John Tu has passed

A special friend, and pearl vendor, John Tu, has died. It is a truly sad day. So many of us benefited from his eye for fabulous pearls, gentlemanly ways, knowledge of insider pearl info and generosity. This photo is from 2018, with our members, Narcissa and Octavia. A visit to John's Gem Faire booth was a delight for many of us, as was a visit to his home for shopping sprees in the basement. John will be missed by many.

I never met John in person, and only knew him online, briefly. He was kind, gentle, with a smile and a sense of humor; a real gentle man. We sometimes exchanged flower photos from our gardens. My condolences to those of you lucky to call him a close and dear friend. Let's see that smile again here ...

OMG. He was wonderful in every way. He was very quiet when I first met him, around 18 years ago, pre-Pearl Guide. He definitely turned into a softie over the years and I think a lot of that had to do with us adopting him as our own. He had a terrific dry sense of humor. The idea of not seeing him again is awful. I am so sad to hear this news.

I remember one time when I was at the Gem Faire at the Orange County Fairgrounds, he pointed out to me that whenever I showed up there, a bunch of women would follow me around, picking up whatever I purchased, and if there was only one hank, they would get in line behind me to buy the leftovers. I hadn't realized I had groupies because I was so focused on the pearls. He thought that was hysterical and good for business! Pearl stalkers.

The last time I went to the Orange County show, Hisano Shepherd showed up and she told me that she knew him for as long as I had. It's a small world, thinking about how many people he impacted with his personality, Taiko Imports, and his wonderful pearls. I hope he knew he was spreading joy.

Hisano and I were so saddened to hear the news. He was such a wonderful person.
