    Default Koi-Koi

This is totally unrelated to pearls, but is related to Japan. I recently watched the Japanese anime Summer Wars. The plot was a bit dumb in that "internet hacking = typing very fast," which is a pet peeve of mine since I'm a computer programmer. But it did introduce me to Nintendo's very first game from 1889, which is a card game called Koi-Koi.

I've become slightly obsessed with Koi-Koi. Anyone else play?
Or play any card game with Hanafuda (flower cards)?

Hmmm, not sure I know those card games. Are they played with the red, black and white, floral and slightly elongated cards? If so, I played a game or two with them, but don't remember the rules that well.

    These cards.

I did find an electronic version of Koi-Koi for the Mac but the instructions were written by someone whose first language is not English. I've been playing it to get used to the rules. I've been googling the rules because I know the cards I've ordered will have the instructions in Japanese language, too. I want to teach my husband Koi-Koi because I prefer to play with a live person and real cards. But the electronic game is quite addicting.

Oooh! I love e-card games, mostly because my hubby doesn't like to play cards. The Koi Koi cards are so pretty—I've just looked up a tutorial and will explore this some more. Fun! Thanks, BW.

I played those cards as a child but I don't remember anymore. So no to online Koi-koi too. Sorry!

I keep imagining the Moon and Pampas Grass card is a giant pearl above a mollusk.

Well, this looks fascinating. I'd play online; playing cards with W ... nope LOL. I'll look it up. BWeaves, do you have an address or link for the Mac version by chance?

The Hanafuda cards are from my childhood. Must’ve been from my grandfather, but I’m with amti, I have no idea what the game was. I only remember playing Karuta because we had to learn the alphabet. (Different cards, obviously)

I found an English version of the rules for KoiKoi from Nintendo, but the illustrations are for the Super Mario Brothers Hanafuda (flower cards). Well, at least the rules are the same, but I had to figure out which flowers substituted for which Mario Brother.
