Moon Sprinkles, You may want to check on getting a safe. They come in a range of sizes, I recommend Liberty safe. They deliver and install too. For the price of appraisals and riders for one year on your pieces you could have bought a good safe that will also keep other things safe from theft and fire.

LFS, you have convinced me over time, a safe is a great investment! It's not just about the jewelry.

Pattye, Since you have a business the safe can be written off as a business expense.

I have the pearls that my father gave my mother for a wedding present. I wore them at my own wedding. They are not insured, because how could they be? To the insurance company they would be ordinary 1950's era akoyas. I should look into safes, but I have the problem on where to put it. Do they get installed in a wall?

A safe won't help if you lose a piece of jewelry. There is still a place for insurance for this situation.

Very true, Red. No doubt insurance is advisable also.

I would definitely insure nice pieces - especially good earrings as they can fall off without you noticing .

Thank you everyone for your responses! I am traveling currently so I am not able to answer every one, but I am reading and appreciating all of the input. A safe is a great idea and one I like, but I don't think a big safe, particularly an in wall safe, would work in the small place we rent. Mostly I do worry about losing stuff. And I was thinking the same thing about earrings, Katbran, that it is so easy to lose them they would be worth insuring!
