Default Historic GUMPS in SF going out of Business

I passed by the other day, I had heard a rumor and turns out it was true. Gumps has always been known for Jade and Pearls in SF (at least in years past), now they are GOOB. I am curious what the pearl jewelry markdowns look like, I've not been to the website.

Oh my. I went into Gumps after my first Ruckus 3 years ago. Hubby came with me that year and wanted to see San Francisco, so we combined the 2 trips. I have to say, I wasn't sure how Gumps was staying in business. There was very little in the store. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. And no customers.

A real shame .... they have had some amazing pearls from me over the years and were always such nice people to work with .....

Did just check the website. Maybe it's not surprising they are closing...

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I have such fond memories of Gumps. It was one of my mother's favorite places to buy all kinds of decorative pieces and jewelry.

    JP (and all)-

It is rather sad, while I think they were very very expensive (needlessly so in some cases) in the past they had such unique items. I can relate to the fond memories, one very special one to me...I stopped in a few years ago and I purchased a gift for my friend who was having her first child, it was such a unique and interesting music box. She said she'd sit in the baby's room in a rocking chair rocking the baby to sleep to the sound of the music box. I don't remember what it plays but it is a sweet memory because that baby is now a high schooler .

It was one of the more interesting shops, with a large selection of pearls...though because of the $$$$ I spent very little time in the jewelry dept (which is odd for me).

That's a really sweet memory and thoughtful gift, BPDDC. I just read about Gump this morning here on jckonline.

BPDDC, sweet story about the music box, you are a most thoughtful gift giver. Well, I'd be happy in any of these necklaces! Are those akoya in the torsade?

OMG, that first torsade. Be still my heart. Oooo, it's on sale for only $13,200. Actually, the one that really made me drool is on sale for $28,000. Yeah, a little out of my pricerange, even on sale. But they do have some interesting pearl pieces on their website. Worth a peruse.

Ya know I am not sure....I think they were Akoyas. I was really trying to get a good picture of the opal clasp...that is what caught my eye in the case. There is a very over priced yet equally stunning faceted Amethyst bead necklace huge beads, there was a torsade of iolites and a huge Amethyst clasp. They have really brought out lots of really lovely inventory. (There is also a chair I now want but that idea will probably get shot down LoL)

I had a chance to run in twice now. My first go around the staff was extremely rude, and the merch mostly meh...
the second time around they've really brought out the nice pieces. Prices are still really really high. What caught my eye most and I did not take a picture was a very large Golden South Sea Baroque Pearl pendant it was stunning! Im going to try and sneak more eye candy pics (if I can convince a certain someone to let me go back and buy that chair!)

Masik- That was my assumption too. The pic did not turn out so great, but the round necklace to the left was really nice and the colors!. There was also a pair earrings of greenish tahitians with a coordinating trio of what I think were green tourmalines...quite pretty
