    Default Mother of Pearl inlay.

I have a question about Mother of Pearl. I see it inlayed with fancy thin black designs. So, stupid question. Does someone cut up a bunch of MoP and stick it down and fill in the cracks with black lacquer? Or do they take a large piece of MoP and incise grooves which are the design, and then fill them in with black lacquer? I have a beautiful MoP box with intricate butterflies and other designs in black and I have no idea how it is done.

Do you have a photo example? My understanding of how inlay is often done is that the space for the inlay is engraved into the base material, then the inlay is placed and fixed with epoxy or other glue, then polished. If the design is really fine, it may have been created separately and added on top of the base (kind of like cloisonne).

BWeaves, there is a wonderful YouTube video of a master Korean maker of lacquer inlay posted by V&A called, How was it made? Korean inlaid lacquer. That may go to answering some of your questions.

Very pretty box, BWeaves. I have no idea how they are made.

There are lots of pretty boxes on eBay under "Korean Mother of Pearl box".

    So exquisite! LOVE. THAT. BOX.

BAS, if you have time, could you take a quick picture of yours? (You're likely involved with school already.) We'd love to see ~
