How to be sure it's true jade? That's the question (according to Shakespeare)

ericw, That is why a trusted source and a reputable lab certificate are so important when purchasing jadeite. ETA: of course there is a vast difference between spending $100 and $10,000. I might not need a certificate for a $100 purchase, knowing that what I'm buying might not be Type A. But if I am spending $10,000 I most certainly would expect a qualified assessment report from GIA or other similar lab.

Thank you, JerseyPearl, for these advices. From what I know, we have not such certificates in Europe, only chinese's... and maybe you will say that it's a wrong mental attitude, but according to the price difference between true and false gems, It would be difficult for me to trust that kind of papers (I was not born yesterday).
I have heard something about a good test, less intrusive than the others (hardness etc) and affordable for lay people and everywhere, even in shops. That's to warm the stone in hand, 1mn, and after, let stand it 30', then if the stone seems cold if you touch it with your tongue, it's true jade.

Before I started buying pearls, I bought jade. The green ring is lab tested and certified so I know color is natural. Blue lavender ring is from my mom. The pendant is different with gingko leaves and rubies. Made in Japan. I just love the butterfly.

[QUOTE=CathyKeshi;204948]Oooh, we need to see those lovely Jade pieces right side up.

Lol, thank for fixing the pictures! I’ve been lucky to find these. Jade, pearls and Niihau shell leis are my weaknesses. Don’t have the budget to buy the best, but I do love what I have.

    Default What might this be?

Everybody is going to be bombarded with posts from me today because it's the first time I've turned on my desktop computer in months to post photos.

I know absolutely nothing about jade. Nothing. My mother and father were in China in 1984 and Mom brought back a few jade pieces that were supposedly antique and the Chinese customs guy commented on them. Maybe they comment on everything? The photo is of a jade pendant, hanging on a 17 or 18" sterling chain. The jade pendant is 32mm with a 10mm rose quartz bead.

Any ideas of what kind of jade this is?

How interesting! A completely different design front to back, with a transluscent gem set in the middle?

It does look like something is in the middle, doesn't it? Almost like a liquid, but no. There's nothing there but the back side of the front carving.
