What causes different types of pearl blemishes eg pits? Is there an authoritative source that discusses this?

I am reluctant to string them myself as they were expensive. I could of course try my skills on a cheap strand...

Here are a couple of photos of purple pearls from Cees. I can’t get them strung just yet as the local jeweller is closed due to Covid-19.
