new to pearls, what do i have here?

This type of pearl is grown in freshwater, not saltwater, but that does not mean they are not real cultured pearls. They are grown in mussels in freshwater lakes or rivers.

Virtually all pearls are cultured on purpose by man by using oysters in saltwater or mussels in freshwater. Many more pearls are grown in freshwater than are grown in saltwater. An uncultured pearl, or natural pearl is one that is found, not grown and these are very rare and expensive. Does that make sense? :)

thank you. i purchased these in beijing and after doing a lot of reading on the internet i thought maybe i was fooled and that they were the kind that are sprayed 40 times to look baroque.. best to you!!!!

i bought them in beijing and thought perhaps i was cheated and they were some kind of cheap fake..

No, they are very nice cultured freshwater pearls. Congratulations! :)
