Hello
I have a lovely set of South Sea pearl drop earrings from Rutherford and am now looking to get a pendant either custom made or already created. Recommendations for quality jewelers who who will make or sell such a product in Melbourne (or reputable online dealers) are wanted.
Many thanks
Tash

Hi Tash_Kookie!

We have members here who live in Australia so you are sure to get some recommendations.

You will want to match up your pearls to the pendant I would think...do you have a Raw Pearls in Melbourne?

I'm curious ..the store where you bought your earrings seems to have a good selection of pearls . Wouldn't it be easier to take them in there and match something up. They would have any number of settings that could be sourced for you. There are so many shades of white and different grades of luster it's not easy to match without having them in hand.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. I have had a look at Raw's website - they are in Adelaide only but also didn't have exactly what I want on their online store. I also looked as Paspaley Pearls - ditto.

The earrings won't be worn with the pendant and chain, but I want the pendant to be of the same style - or very similar to the earrings in how the pearl is set etc. Rutherford is in the Melbourne CBD and have another store in the inner eastern suburbs and I live on the Mornington Peninsula and am time poor to be travelling into town. However, I will try to stop into the store on Friday as I am in town for a work meeting. I do hope they can help me. I also have a local jeweler sourcing pearls who could make something but I am not 100% convinced he will deliver on exactly what I want.

I took my earrings out last night and remembered how beautiful they were - a present to myself for my wedding a few years ago. Now my first child is one and it's time to buy myself another present!

Lovely area where you are :) I can see now the problem in dealing with the original jeweler given the distance. That said, since they sold the earrings it's possible that the company that made the earrings also makes a pendant finding. Or, if not, Rutherford can most likely find one similar to what you want. Finding a lovely pearl won't be hard if you don't need an exact colour match - just be sure to go for excellent luster as the pendant has to stand alone and the pearl is the focus.

Go to a local jeweller that specialises in south sea pearls. Rutherford stocks Kailis pearls, but I'm sure they can find you loose pearls as well. Sometimes I think it makes sense to buy 3 pearls in one go instead of 2! If you turn two into a pair of earrings, at least you still have a spare and they match. Or it could be turned into a pendant in one go :)

My first SS pendant came from Rutherford years ago. Unfortunately I have found their customer service a bit "uppity" recently and since discovering the variety and affordable prices of the online pearl world I wouldn't return to bricks and mortar retailers again. Unless I had a lot of money to spend and wanted gem quality! But if you want to see and touch the product and match it to something you already own, then online doesn't offer this.

Pearlharbourer, it all comes down to trust, doesn't it? :) If the waters have been tested and it was okay, then you'd feel safe to shop whichever way you choose. I'd have to say though, it can be hard to shop for pearls without seeing them in person simply because they can look so different under different kinds of light.
