I am just being curious: what will actually happen when you store pearls in a close zip lock for a long time?
Lost of lustre? Cracks?

It is a fair question, Pearlkitchen. What would you consider a long time? I don't think there have been any formal tests done; we can only speculate. The most "fragile" pearls are akoya with thin nacre. Most vintage pearls are akoya. The owner of such pearls often is unaware of their actual condition and quality. Who would want to purposely chance damaging their pearls by testing this? So it is recommended that some humidity is good for pearls. Best of all is to enjoy and wear our pearl, following proper care practices.

If you have seen the photos from Hong Kong Show you will notice the huge plastic bags of pearls. Of course, the pearls are not closed up in the bags for many years. It's certainly possible there might be some cracking and loss of luster if low quality akoya spent years sealed in a plastic bag inside a dry safe deposit box.
