Documentation for pearls?

Hello Pearl Experts,

After having tried a forum search without success, I have a question to ask.

What is an official documentation to grade a pearl, similar to what the GIA or AGS is doing for gemstones?
Is there an organization that officially grades a pearl?

If none, what would be a document to ask a trader in order to be sure that the purchased pearls correspond to an established standard, and possess certain characteristics? for example, their origin, size, AAA not AA, etc?

Just found that the GIA also provides reports on pearls.

The GIA Pearl Identification Report details the quantity, weight, shape, color, identity (natural or cultured), mollusk (when determinable) they originated from, the environment they formed within (saltwater or freshwater), and any detectable treatments. The report includes a digital image. For any loose, mounted, or strung pearls.

The GIA Pearl Identification & Classification Report includes all Identification Report information as well as classifications for luster, surface, nacre thickness, and matching (if applicable).

I think generally the report is often used when a 'natural' pearl/pearls need verification. I don't know that it would be worth pursuing a report on a cultured pearl.

AAA not AA

Pearl grading is subjective -- one person's AAA is another's AA.

With practice, you can tell the difference between freshwater and saltwater pearls, and you can measure with a caliper.

Ebay has taught me to be skeptical of any COA.
