  • Brenda Smith Plays With Pearls

    Brenda Smith Plays With Pearls

Brenda Smith creates bold and beautiful pearl designs. Everyone loved seeing her glamorous Celebration earrings in the CPAA Awards display, so I felt lucky to find her in the design center of AGTA Tucson.

This necklace was unexpected and so much fun. An unusual pearl deserves unusual treatment!

Notice the tiny akoya keshi outlining the piece - a dainty contrast to the black lace. And this necklace was a stunning use of freshwater cultured pearls and diamonds. ...

Does the Woman Make the Pearls More Beautiful?

You can't see her lovely face, but I'm sure that she makes all her pearls glow, and not the other way around!

    Enjoy.

  • Real VS Fake - A Close Look at Typical "Pearls"

Real VS Fake - A Close Look at Typical "Pearls"

Not everyone has a gemological microscope to have a closer look at the drill hole of a pearl to see if it says anything about its validity. That is why it's a great idea to own a 10 power loupe so you can magnify pearls in low tech.

Here is a typical artificial pearl under a microscope. Without magnification, it looks pretty good, but zoom in and you can see that the smooth surface is disrupted near the drill hole.

A real pearl has structure to the nacre that causes...

  • Cutlery and Pearls - Etienne Perret

Cutlery and Pearls - Etienne Perret

Etienne and I had a lot of fun staging his pearls with a ceramic spoon and fork. The clean look of ceramic, with the glistening surface of a South Sea cultured button pearl, makes a stunning version of the classic black and white combination.

  • What Does Hanadama Mean?

    What Does Hanadama Mean?

Hanadama cultured akoya pearls are the finest akoya pearls. They have the highest ratings for luster, shape and surface qualities and meet the minimum nacre thickness of 0.4 mm, but often much higher. Hanadama, from the Japanese, roughly translates to Spherical Flower. So romantic. These are "natural white" hanadama pearls, meaning that they have not undergone color treatment. Most akoya pearls are "pinked", a process of pink tinting to bring out the rose overtones. ...

  • Baroque Blue South Sea Pearls

    Baroque Blue South Sea Pearls

There were many beautiful pearls at the September Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair, but these blue South Sea pearls stood out and were seen at more than one booth. Many of these pearls displayed a distinctive banding and were bathed in orient.

These fabulous pearls were hand-selected by Kevin Canning of Pearls of Joy.

  • Hong Kong Super-Metallic Freshwaters

    Hong Kong Super-Metallic Freshwaters

There were many special pearls in the September Hong Kong show, but these remarkable metallic freshwater cultured pearls were at the top of my list. It would be fun to see the blue, green and rose overtones separated and matched.

First photo with white background and strange show lighting that caused visible banding.

Second photo with gray background and carried out to the vendor's own lighting. No banding, but each type of light brings out different aspec...

GIA Dreams of Diamonds Exhibition - Basra Pearls

The Dreams of Diamonds exhibition at the Carlsbad campus of the Gemological Institute of America was a rare collaboration that thrilled everyone in attendance. See the GIA article HERE. According to GIA, "This exotic necklace features an 18K gold and silver pendant which has 58.72 carats of rose cut diamonds. The strands and tassels are Basra pearls... MUNNU The Gem Palace was founded more than three centuries ago. The house's craftsmen were jewelers to India's Maharajas and British viceroys." ...

  • Cibjo webinar/discussion on origins of gemstones
    by CortezPearls
Although it is not about PEARLS (but it may include them), some of you may find it interesting, so here is the information:

The origin of a gemstone, namely the geographic location at which it was extracted from the earth, has for years posed substantial scientific challenges to the gemmologists who are called on to make definitive judgements.

The current focus on supply chain integrity and traceability means that the concept of origin has expanded and is more relevant

Hello dear Pearl-Guide.com Forum Members: With spring comes renewed energies and pulses, the recent system upgrade also allows me to start adding up content that we believe is necessary to keep the forum growing and renewed, making it the #1 Source for Pearl information on the World-Wide-Web for years to come. I had this idea of a column years ago, when I still published "The Sea of Cortez Peal Blog", which went "black" after a massive Russian hacker attack (the importance of updating your system...

Carolyn Ehret operates Ehret Design Gallery on eBay, a favorite of our members, and myself! If you find yourself having to wait for a car repair or a delayed appointment, I can practically guarantee that the time will fly by while you look at the fun items on her site. Of course, looking can be dangerous to your pocketbook. This is also a great place to find a few gems to add to a necklace or earrings--or just to source beautiful and unusual pearls. I had Carolyn add gold spacer beads and finding...

  • Pearls Make Me Feel Beautiful
    by GemGeek
Looking through photos from this summer, I noticed that all the photos where I am wearing pearls are the ones where I am joyous and glowing. Could there be a transfer of radiance from the pearls to the wearer? Can pearls fill the soul with visible happiness? I'm not sure, but I love my self-purchase of pearls from little h beyond measure.

Happy Blaire, followed by closeups of the pearls...
